Shutter Island

Excellent performance by DiCaprio. Good range of twists, in that the ones that one can see looming are not the real ones.

5/5

Agreed. I may even give this a second viewing at some stage, there'll undoubtedly be subtle clues that I missed.

8/10

I thought it was pretty swell. Maybe one of the better performances by Leo and good plot-twists.

Unfortunately for me I saw the entire plot twist from the first scene and I spent most of the film hoping I was wrong. The solution under scrutiny is so absurd given what occurs in the film the whole thing collapses under its own absurdity - what psychological role play would ever allow a patient to put himself and others in such constant risk of death? Teddy could have accidentally killed himself or any of the guards or other patients numerous times. The overblown melodramatic style didn't do it any favours for me either. It was beautifully shot of course, and well acted, but I was disappointed.

I think this was addressed when it's mentioned that he is the biggest person in the war on lobotomies. If they can cure him, they'll never have to hurt anyone again. So, if a few people get put in danger, the ends will justify the means.

Really? If he'd actually fallen off the cliff and killed himself or bashed one of the guard's brains out the whole place would be shut down instantly. I don't buy it.

Spoliers:

I've got to agree with demonic. The twist grated on me and although I didn't give it any great thought at the time, as demonic pointed out, there were too many plot devices that didn't quite feel right. I just don't think they would have gone to so much trouble to cure him.

Didn't like the ending either, we found it a bit too ambiguous.

Is that the royal we, BB?

One more thing... I think my favourite scene in the whole film was the cliff side conversation with Patricia Clarkson's character as it turned some screws and made the mystery more interesting. (She's also a great actor). What a massive cop out just to say "it was all in your mind" with absolutely no basis for the conversation to have taken place at all. That means he imagined the fire as well - or made it himself without realising. Just stupid.

Oh, sorry, should have said - watched it with my alter-ego. He likes similar films to me and we get on well.

Totally with you on the cave stuff, it's almost like they got to a point where they said, "Hey, we can do pretty much anything during this bit, because it's all just a dream." Dallas has got a lot to answer for.

I'm certain that Brian De Palma watched this and thought " so THAT'S how you do Hitchcock! "

There were a lot of scenes ( the ferry, the clifftop ) that looked fake in that they looked like bluescreen. Was that what Scorcese intended as part of the whole theme or am I just too bluescreen aware?
