This just came out in the U.S.

http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox_searchlight/daywatch/trailera/

I'm really excited. It looks like 300 meets Kung Fu Hustle.

"The Angels of Light and the Warriors of Darkness faught for possession of the Chalk of Fate which controls our destinies," has got to be one of the all time greatest backstories in all of cinema.

The Chalk of Fate???
There's a premise that hasn't been overanalysed in film.
Visually stunning trailer though.

Here's a few thoughts from the NY Times

I like the little echo of the word "Fate."

I haven't seen Night Watch but I've just netflixed it. It only gets a 6.4, which isn't great, but Day Watch gets 7.2 so far.

Trailer makes it look like a superhero action FX-fest. I'll certainly check it out, as I don't think I've ever seen a large-budget Russian sci-fi action flick.

Oh yeah, I just added it to fwfr with the third part of the trilogy.

Timur Bekmambetov's Trilogy

Dusk Watch is in the making, although this one is in English and appears to be Fox.

OK, I just watched Night Watch. It would appear to be a good idea to watch this before watching Night Watch 2 aka Day Watch (strangely enough). Part 2 begins a few years after Part 1 ends, but characters are the same etc.

Sure, you could jump into LOTR at The Two Towers but not surprisingly it pays to watch a trilogy in order. Night Watch is a tetralogy BTW.

And, I'd strongly recommend reading the Wiki entry before watching the movie, I wish I had, it would have made more sense. There are no real spoilers on the page, just some background on the Light and Dark Others, the Gloom, and characters.

I took your advice and rented Night Watch ... and I'm glad I did! I thought it was at least as good as The Matrix. I can't wait to see Day Watch. I couldn't believe that both Night and Day Watch were made for onlyt $4.2 million each! That's less than 5% of the budget for any of The Matrix films. Granted that the visual effects aren't quite as photo-realistic of The Matrix and it doesn't have any big stars in it, but that the effects the Watch films are as entertaining to watch and the performances are just as good.

OK. I just got back from seeing Day Watch at the Arclight in Hollywood. I thought it was every bit as good as Night Watch and look forward to buying them both on DVD.
