I've seen them all sporadically over the years, but over the past few months, my husband, son and I sat down and watched them all in order, ending this Sunday with VI.
I totally loved the whole series, and somehow managed to turn it into a chick flick. By the end of VI, I was sobbing. My husband was like and my son was like "Dad, look at Mommy, what is she doing?" I got really connected to the characters and watching little Anakin grow up to be Darth and do all of those things and then redeem himself was too much! |

Cool. I can understand how the whole series could be improved by watching them close enough together so everything is all fresh in your mind. I definitely appreciated LOTR (Extended Cut) more when I watched them in order over a weekend.
I've never watched Star Wars in that order, must try it one day. I mean one weekend. I mean one fortnight. |

I'm really looking forward to the day I can sit with my boy and watch them. Tori, how old is your son? I was 11 when it first came out and was wondering at what age would it make sense. Also, I wouldn't know which order to screen them.

I still think they should be viewed by order of release, not chronologically. |

I agree it would be like trying to put Pulp Fiction in order.
The best thing about wathcing them I through VI is that you get I and II out of the way early and are only somewhat let down by VI - Watching IV and V and then suffering through the three worst in a row - you may never finish it. |

I actually did the same thing a couple weekends ago, and from I to VI, too, which I agree is the wrong way to watch them. (I didn't decide the order.)
we did a lot more mocking and laughing than crying, but to be fair, we were all pretty drunk.

I guess once you've seen them all, it becomes optional...you can re-watch them in any order you want.
But it should be a law that you have to see the OT before you can see the PT. At the very least, someone who's already a fan of Star Wars encouraging a newbie to watch them in chronological order should be arrested and locked up PERMANENTLY...the idea of intentionally ruining one of the most shocking revelations in the history of cinema...it just makes me so mad! |

And you definitely need to save Jar Jar for AFTER the Ewoks. The mind can only handle so much. |

One of these days I'm going to give Tori's m.o. a try. Probably in five years or so, when they'll be begging us to buy yet another set of DVDs for our shiny new Blu-Ray players. [I saw I, II and III in hi-def on HBO, and they were spectacular -- almost as good as the digital performance of III we saw at the Ziegfeld.] |

He is five, and he understands quite a bit, but we do pause for some questions. My favorite misunderstanding is that he thinks one of the baddies is 'Jennifer Grievious'.
We watch them in chronological order, I-VI |

My kids have seen the prequels at the theater, but not the original trilogy, they've watched that on video.
They pretty much think Anakin is a hero (even though they know he's Vader Later).
They didn't understand the sick humor of the Vader Friends and Family Plan that someone (was it Verizon?) came out with around the time of Ep. III.

We had my nephews over and when Anakin went to the dark side, I totally ruined it and said "He's becoming Darth Vader!" They about fell over. They were totally shocked and didn't believe me. (everyone, even my nephews, knows that 'I don't get it' is a pretty accurate description for me) |

I'd like to watch them in chronological order one day too, but I'll similarly wait for one D.V.D. box set or another. I think I was about the same age as Philip when I started watching them. Like most people, I think thefoxcub should start with A New Hope. Because time shifts significantly anyway, I don't think it would be more confusing than watching them in chronological order. It's also the most self-contained, and doesn't have the element of a small child having to leave his single parent behind, which I think could be distressing for some children (though of course it depends upon their personalities - many would just be excited that he was setting off on an adventure). |
