damalc is such a fanboy. i saw SR and felt like i was 10 years old sitting on the living room floor, with my school books and jacket in a pile by the door, and not hearing a word my mother said ... again. i had a ball at this one. some of the action was a little too fast to keep up with and confusing, but maybe they were trying to show that's what it's like driving 350mph/563kmph. but they were mostly a joy. some of the scenes looked exactly like the cartoon, almost Seuss-ish, and that's what i wanted to see. Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, all good to great actors, (the jury's still out on Emile Hirsch) and they did their jobs but i was disappointed that they played some of their stuff so straight. a little more over-the-top would have been appropriate to match the racing action and the cartoon feel. the priceless part to me was when Speed finishes a race, leaps out of the car before it stops and lands in that pose with his arm across his chest and his red socks blazing, just like the cartoon. i grinned 'til my face hurt.

Speed Racer
The pretty colours are nice for a few minutes, which is why I didn't give it 1/5. I decided to go to sleep during it, as it just wasn't worth such a very, very long running time. It was longer than the Bollywood film that I saw later! What a pointless film. Perhaps I slept through all the interesting bits, and it's just a strange coincidence that all the bits I watched were the same. Perhaps not. |

Pretty soon, films won't even attempt to have characters plot dialogue actors or even a setting; it will just be a swirling glob of shapes and colors.
With a little tweaking this could be a good summer movie. It emphatically is not so. The obnoxious, weird-looking Spritle dominates the movie the same way that Johnny Depp dominates the Pirates movies, simply because he's the only member of the zero-dimensional cast to actually exhibit any personality. Rumors that Emile Hirsch, John Goodman, and Christina Ricci were in this movie turned out to be unfounded, although I did like that large-ish red blob's performance as Pops, and that floating, featureless white blob did a decent job in the title role too.
Despite its shortcomings, I kind of have to admire this movie -- in many ways, this is what the noxious Transformers movie should have been. It's very faithful to the cartoon, but that just raises uncomfortable questions about whether the "Speed Racer" cartoon was ever worth watching to begin with. |

I enjoyed this film. It is granted, way too over the top but upon seeing it I had heard nothing but bad things. I'd have preferred more mountainside races and less futuristic Japanese-looking race tracks.
I really enjoyed the racing commentary since I think auto racing is the dumbest "sport" in the world. for instance, the announcer after commentating on how bad a crash was said "but that's what people want to see, God help them." I loved the evil corporations dominating the sport so the little guy could not win.
Plot development was minimal. the CGI was great though. Not a film to be watched twice. still, I give it 6 out of 10.
