A pretty violent selection, it must be said.
A mini-essay on Abel Gance: You know that Human Centipede thing that's doing the fwfr rounds? Well, okay, it's modern gothic. But there's movie history to consider. Abel Gance, by any account a cinema genius, reponsible for such powerful and inventive silent and early sound features as Napoleon and La Roue, had an early fling at horror. Not the cut-out-your-guts-and-bbq-them-for-supper kind of horror, but the scary psych horror of a sculptor staring into a mirror, smearing himself with blood, and taking poison in order to document the effects of pain.
The actor's name was Édouard de Max. The film's translated as The Mask of Horror. I hope my review makes sense now

It wouldn't be complete without a Velvet Underground reference.
Casino Jack is about Mr. Abramoff.

abroad selection (Latin, German, French, Spanish, French)
Jarman’s controversially homoerotic Sebastiane is about St Sebastian & his fellow Roman soldiers in a garrison in the 3rd century AD. The dialogue is in Latin (with English subs).
My review — second from the left — of The Seventh Continent is conceivably a spoiler, but only in the unlikely event of your watching the movie without having any idea of its subject matter.
The Tourist is, or at any rate will be, a remake of the French movie Anthony Zimmer (2005), which is about attempts by the forces of law & order to trap one of those always-one-step-ahead criminal masterminds.
