Yes, I'm a heterosexual male and I'm starting the Sex and the City 2 thread. What of it?? I freely admit that I watched and actually liked the series.
I saw the first movie with my wife and kind of enjoyed it; not the greatest film ever, but I didn't mind watching it at all.
But this second film was bloated and self-indulgent, bordering on self-parody. I guess I should have known what I was getting into when the film began with Liza Minnelli officiating at a gay wedding!
Things settled down a bit after that, though, and they set up a couple of plotlines that looked like they could turn out to be interesting, so I had some hope for it. But then they went to Abu Dhabi and the whole thing suddenly ran off the rails. During the "I Am Woman" karaoke number, my wife leaned over to me and whispered, "I owe you for this."
See, if they really wanted to say something about the way women are treated in some parts of the world, and make a statement about female empowerment, there was every opportunity to do so in a way that would feel real and even poignant. But by the time Samantha, after being repeatedly advised to respect the culture and refusing to do so, gets arrested for groping a guy in public, and ends up in the middle of the market square screaming and swearing and flipping off the local males, and then the girls get rescued by a pack of Arab women wearing cutting-edge designer fashions under their burqas... the whole thing had become a cartoon. Samantha, in particular, is now a ludicrous caricature of her former self.
Carrie and Big's story was OK, I guess, though the stuff with Aiden seemed forced. And I never really liked Big and still don't.
Miranda's and Charlotte's stories had the most potential and felt the most real, and were both given weak, tacked-on resolutions:
Miranda had quit her job because of an asshole chauvinist boss, but then longed for something more than being a stay-at-home mom. But now it's OK! She got a better job and now she's happy! Yay!
Charlotte is worried that Harry may be cheating on her with the Hot Nanny. And Kristin Davis played the insecurity and uncertainty, and the challenges of motherhood, quite well. And in the end, we know that Harry wasn't cheating. Why? Because she realizes he loves her and is a good and faithful husband? Nah. It's because Hot Nanny is a lesbian! Ha Ha! Lesbians are funny, and men are stupid.
Despite the money to be had, the creators of SATC would be well-advised to realize that the story arcs of these characters are complete, and they should leave well enough alone. Sadly, though, I predict Sex and the City 3 coming to a theater near you in Summer 2012.

Sounds to me like one to pass on. I (and my very straight husband both ) really liked the TV series, but for some reason, I didn't find the movie to be all that good. That was why I wasn't interested in the second one even before I heard anything about it - and hearing things like this does seem to put the lid on it.
Attempts to turn TV series into movie and visa versa aren't always all that successful. Sure there are some exceptions (M*A*S*H for instance - great movie and great TV series), but they only prove the rule.
Makes one think that Hollywood is far too often plagued with writer's block.

Sex and the City 2
Wheelz has pretty much got it covered, although it was still a passable 3/5 for me.
The secret-fashionistas scene is just excruciating and the nanny scenario is completely stupid -- Charlotte should trust her husband around non-lesbians and just because she fell for an ugly, bald, middle-aged man (which was addressed extensively at the time) doesn't mean that a hot nanny is going to!
And the brief appearances of Smith and Aidan just seem to be a desperate bid to tick off as many fans' preferences as possible. |

| I forgot to mention that the best thing about the film is probably Empire State of Mind, which is no doubt why it features in the trailer so prominently. I'm sure that in practice living in New York is just as appalling as living in London, but I find the song's fondness for the city, like the characters', quite touching. |
