i recommend these two films that i saw recently if you can find them. i think they're both in pretty limited release.
both are about mountain culture with shared themes of crime, poverty and drugs.
"The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia" is a documentary about a particular family in WV -- some real characters.
"Winter's Bone" is a crime drama/mystery set in the Ozark Mountains, with some scenes as tense as anything i've seen in a while.

4/5 fwiffs each from me.
