Posted - 12/22/2013 : 22:14:42 I remember being surprised that McQueen was black when I saw him interviewed around the time of "Shame". It was more a welcome revelation though that a young black director had managed to make significant inroads in the British film industry, had clearly made films of interest to him with white protagonists, and his race hadn't been especially remarked upon or flagged up - exactly as you'd hope it would be in this day and age. |

Posted - 12/22/2013 : 00:42:15 After posting the above, I felt like going to read the Wikipedia article about Steve McQueen. Two things surprised me:
(1) The other Steve McQueen still has just his name as his article's title, rather than ... (actor).
(2) He's black. Is it good that I had no idea what colour he was, or was it racist of me to be surprised, i.e. to have implicitly assumed that he was white, especially as it's more reasonable for 12 Years... to have been directed by a black person? |
