Just approving a bunch of reviews and hit upon some for Right At Your Door (advertised here in the UK as having "a twist you'll never see coming").

Unfortunately, one review's explanation read "this is the big twist". Given I've yet to see the film, this was a bit of a pisser.

If I go and see the film now, I wonder if I can get my money back since the advert's blatantly wrong?

That's one of the advantages of having a crap memory. I can read a spoiler, then a few months later watch the movie having totally forgotten the spoiler.

I actually avoided the twist in THE CRYING GAME until I saw the movie. Wow! But this was before bloggiquity and the like.

I tried it for the final twist in Eastwood's boxing movie. But the conservatives raised a stink which got into the real news, and a NYTimes headline gave it away!

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY ruined THE SIXTH SENSE for me, but Ms. Randall had not yet seen the piece and thus was creatively virginal when we first saw the flick. I was reduced to "watching it the second time" the first time.

[I wrote EW a nasty letter after they gave out the crucial plot point when they reviewed Gus Van Sant's remake of PSYCHO. The whole purpose of remaking PSYCHO in color was to give the same shocks to kids who don't dig b&w. Van Sant's remake was lame, of course it was, but why assume everyone's seen the original and GIVE AWAY THE ENDING? SHAME!!!!]

Another movie with a twist.

That policy (rule?) makes sense. And watching an M. Night Shymalayan movie makes me always look for the twist

Zigactly, demonic. Also, once you know there's a twist, you're sat there in the cinema trying to guess what it is, rather than just enjoy the damn film.

Some of my best cinema experiences have been when I've had no idea what the film is about and have been too dumb to spot the twist coming. Needless to say, I don't get this so much these days- more down to knowing everything about the film than my IQ having shot up, I should stress

We've had this spoiler debate before and my advice is always to never read any FWFRs of a movie you want to see. (Sorry Benji, I know that doesn't help you...)

I've actually withheld a good review for Matchstick Men from the FYC because I loved the ending and I don't want to spoil it for others.

For those who have seen the movie...

I've come to expect plot points if I'm looking at a review page; it's the nature of the beast. But I do feel for you Benj - it's not like you have any choice in the matter.

By the way, the advertising for "Right at your Door" really annoyed me. Why did they think mentioning there's a big twist on the poster is a good idea? If you really "can't see it coming" then it's a rubbish twist because it hasn't come from a logical place in the story. If it is a great twist I don't want to know and be looking out for it and probably guess it during the film. Advertisers are such cretins.

Not sure about declining reviews on the grounds that they're spoilers- could be blocking some potentially great reviews by doing so.

In an ideal world, reviews could be marked as spoilers and would not be shown unless requested, but that's a whole lot more work on top of the rest of the site

  • I've never heard of this movie, but added it to my Netflix queue (thank you)
  • Can you decline the review, since it is such an obvious spoiler? (Haven't read it, going on y'alls advice)
  • um, don't have another point. Sorry about that, Benj.

I've just read the review. On no account should anyone visit that page if they do not want the film spoiled for them.
Demisemicenturian Posted - 09/20/2006 : 17:35:55
Benj, you might not even want to read this...

Luckily, when I saw it, I had forgotten that this was the film that had been advertised with that. (I don't think it's right that they even said that much.) I think that if I had known there would be a twist, I would have guessed it, but since I did not, I went from finding it quite good (because of certain human interaction aspects) to walking out of the cinema thinking "Wow!" This was only lessened by the fact that I walked straight down the road and saw the great Little Miss Sunshine immediately afterwards.

Given that you refused my review for "Assault on Precinct 13" - "Girl Gets Unexpected Twist" - a little girl complains to the ice cream man that she wanted a lemon twist and gets shot in the head - well, you ain't getting no sympathy from me, buddy!

Oh... you're really twisting my melon...

Okay, so now I'm gonna' have to go and see it to figure out if there's no need for me to see it
