Sean says: Happy 1st 2007 FYC round!
Put any five reviews you like in your F.Y.C. list. The only rule is to not use the ones from the previous round - you must change them every round. Post here to declare that you've done it. Sooner is better than later. You must read the F.Y.C.s of all participants. The next round starts on Monday or Thursday at 6:00 a.m. FWFR time, whichever comes next. |

Given that business seems to be duller than usual, should we be postponing the FYCTh scheduled for today to Monday?? |

D'you know, I haven't had a single review approved this year. I've had to resort to highlighting a few of my top vote-earners from 2006.
V&V
I'm happy to say I got a smathering of reviews approved the last couple days and broke the top 100!
Nice one. See elsewhere for congratulatory message. |

Kind of. The Sultanate was abolished in 1922, and the Turkish Republic was officially founded in 1923. The Caliphate, however, was not abolished until November in the following year. Just saying.
Happy about the Inconvenient Tooth review, which I have just voted for.
Thanks for the vote.
Just out of curiosity, what is the difference between a Caliph and a Sultan? Is it like the difference between a bishop and a pope, or is it more subtle? Is a sultan a religious title or a political title (or both)?
Sultan is a political title, which Eastern monarchs used going back centuries. The Caliph was similar to a Sunni Muslim pope, responsible for all the religious decrees and whatnot. When the Ottomans conquered Mecca in the 15th Century, the Ottoman Sultan at the time also adopted the Caliphate. Until 1922, all Ottoman Sultans were also automatically the Caliphs of the Sunni Muslims. Once the Sultanate was abolished, the title was passed on to the erstwhile Sultan's uncle, who, too, was exiled soon after, along with the rest of the Ottoman Royal family, in 1924, when the Caliphate was finally abolished.
Thanks for the explanation. That clears things up.
And thanks to everyone who re-voted on "An inconvenient tooth!" |
