Posted - 04/16/2007 : 18:14:45 I know there's aready a 'geddit' thread, but it's up to its third page, so seems to have run its course.
Anyway...
I've just had this: 'Weed hides weed' rejected with the reason "don't understand".
If I tell you that's it's for 'The Breakfast Club' can you tell me if you get it or not? To me it seems really obvious for anyone who's seen that film.
Cheers

Posted - 04/17/2007 : 18:10:21 Weed is a British term - it doesn't so much mean nerd / geek ...
... it means someone who is weak, skinny or scrawny. Someone who isn't good at fighting. However, the stereotypical brainy, bookworm types tend to be weeds, and Brian in The Breakfast Club is definitely a weed.
I would describe the character Peter Parker as a weed (before he got bitten by a radioactive spider of course).
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Yukon

Posted - 04/17/2007 : 17:59:14 Weed, to me, is marijuana, and to a lesser extent, unwanted plants in the yard. I've never heard the term "weed" to mean "nerd." |

Posted - 04/17/2007 : 17:29:50 Weed means both things over here but much more so 'the weak slight people' and less so 'grass'. |

Misterbadidea - do you mean you've never heard marijuana described as 'weed' or you've never hear a nerdy, brainy, bookworm guy described as a weed?
Bife - I did resubmit it with an explanation before starting this thread.
Baftababe - how much do you pay for votes? I'm sure we can cut a deal for a bulk order.

I'm with Misterbadidea, I've never heard a nerdy person discribed as "weedy." In that context, it's a good review. |

Pfft, maybe for some people. I've had to pay for all mine.
You've never sent me any money for the votes I given you.
My fault I'm afraid. I assured Tori that you and I share a numbered bank account in Switzerland. That's where your dollars were until I spent them on a motor. I knew it would come out sooner or later. In the meantime, I've enjoyed driving my new car. If you'd care to pick it up from where I parked it you're welcome to it. |

I never think of a 'Dont understand' decline as a good (or a bad) call on the part of the MERPs. Unlike generic, similar, more than four, no reason etc declines, I translate 'dont understand' into 'please resubmit with an explanation'.
I dont think the MERPs often decline a review as too obscure for the general public to understand, but as too obscure for them to understand, because if they dont understand then they have no basis for approving or declining it
Same here, and to be honest, while I am in normal cases strict about only submitting a review twice, I don't count Don't understand rejections towards this. |

Seems obvious to me, and I've only seen the film once. I did not realise that weed was not a completely general term. |

But if it wasn't obvious to you guys, then there's no reason it should be obvious to the MERPS. So I accept ... good call on the MERPs' part.

Ok ok ok - I accept it then ... it isn't as obvious as I thought.
Bafta Babe (who hasn't seen the film) hit the nail on the head.
It's a reference to the scene where they go to Bender's locker to get his stash. Bender makes Brian (the weedy nerdy kid) hide the weed in his underwear. Hence - 'Weed Hides Weed' (in his shorts).
But if it wasn't obvious to you guys, then there's no reason it should be obvious to the MERPS. So I accept ... good call on the MERPs' part.
By the way - did I miss something overnight? Normally I get one or two votes daily if I'm lucky ... suddenly about 12 of my reviews have been voted.

See, I've never heard the term "weed" used in that context, ever. Maybe it's a regional thing where you're from, dude.
Prob'ly more a generational thing, dude!
