Earlier today, I was just behind Alan Smithee, who had 1152 reviews, and feeling quite pleased with myself for preparing to pass him/it. Imagine my surprise when I logged in tonight and found that he had suddenly jumped to 38th 35th position, with 1501 1550 reviews and climbing.

Now I don't make a habit of complaining about Alan Smithee reviews, but it's bothersome to note that this fictious person can freely climb the review ladder and gain 350 400 reviews. I guess my question is, if someone really doesn't want their reviews, if they are so unimportant as to warrant discarding them, then why bother disowning them? Why not just delete them? I can understand the occasional disowning, but this wholesale approach is truly annoying.

To each his/her own opinion on Alan Smithee. I don't think of him at all, especially when deleting my reviews--not disowning. I have only deleted two of my reviews (you may think I should delete more , and I may want to, but I haven't figured out a way to select several at a time and delete them without a huge inconvenience/process), so I don't think I am placing a hardship on benj or the MERPS.

I cannot for the life of me figure what anybody cares where Alan Smithee is in the rankings. What difference does it make? We all know he's not a real person, so why should it bother anyone if he's ahead of you?

Once a year I go through my reviews for a spring cleaning. Alan only has a couple of my reviews. I dont mind Alan. Maybe thats because he's it's nowhere near me. I figure if you took the time to write a review and spent time wondering when it would get passed and hoped it would get you an added accolade, then why delte something yoiu spent a great deal of time with. Give it to Alan. Thats all I got to say.

I once again fall to the tatami, but not before giving you a vote, my master!

This is exactly what I don't think people have the ethical right to do. Why should a review stand on the site without the reviewer standing by it?
Because the owner of the reviews (benj) stood by them when he posted them on the site. If he wants them to remain, then he'll leave them. If he wants them gone then he'll delete them.

I Smitheed them rather than deleting them, as they are not my reviews.
That's just reneging responsibility for your contribution to the quality of the site.
Nope, it's just accepting that I don't own the reviews. Benj does. Check out the copyright statement in the FAQs. Benj set up the Smithee account to prevent people deleting reviews that they don't want that he presumably wants. Why would be have set up Smithee if he wanted people to delete their reviews as a result of changing their reviewing style?

Benj could remove the "Delete" button from the site altogether to prohibit people deleting their reviews if he felt like it. In fact I could think of a stronger argument for prohibiting review deletion than review disowning. I'm specifically referring to preventing a repeat of George Kaplan's tantrum (my assumption) where he deleted all his reviews (hundreds of them, and many of them pretty damn good ) rather than giving them to Smithee when he quit. Or look at this another way: Do you think noncentz would have the ethical right to delete all his reviews if he felt like it? I think not.

the day will come when he's high enough that perhaps something will need to be done about his presence on the lists. I don't think anyone wants to see him become a bronze deity.
This shows extreme bias towards thinking that certain statuses are of importance while others are not. What difference does it make if he is a bronze deity?!!
I think it's not terribly important if he's say, No. 83 in the rankings, but if he became No. 1 and was the first reviewer that new visitors to the site looked at, then there would be a problem. Hence it's more of an issue the higher he climbs in the rankings.

I actually agree with you on whether or not Smithee should be in the rankings, I'd rather see him continue to exist but not appear in the rankings. It's not a big deal to me though. But I stand by my position that disowning valid reviews is a better option than deleting them.

I understand the other points of view, but Smithee amuses me. Cut "him" some slack.
