On what basis do the MERPs decide that something is two words? Their own heads?

If I feel any doubt at all (even though I am usually still right), I use a dictionary. Editors all do this far more than people with worse spelling/punctuation.

If they really, really, think I might have made a mistake in this area, shouldn't they still think that I probably haven't and check? If they don't want to check, then shouldn't they trust me? Frankly, I know what I'm talking about. Do I really need to add with every review "I know how to spell; I know how to punctuate; I know how to use a dictionary"?

The review whose incorrect rejection prompted this thread has now eventually been processed again. Surprise, surprise -- the MERP rejected it for a different reason (also not correct). As I've mentioned before, there seems to be a real trend amongst them of responding to being proven wrong by just rejecting reviews anyway.

I was thinking Sal, maybe you should change your four word description to 'The opposite of apposite.' I think it's got a ring to it.

The private way would solve this individual case -- indeed, I've done that. There was no need to paste a link, though, since the form will be the same in any reputable dictionary. It is a totally standard hyphenated noun phrase -- even the verb form is hyphenated. (Compound verbs are much less often hyphenated than compound nouns.)

The point is that this is a general issue. I'm not primarily trying to correct this one MERP in this one case. You cannot talk about their giving their time (which, frankly, many of us would be happy to do) when they are only wasting their own time by going against something totally objective.

There are different ways of dealing with this, one is the way you have done it a public complaint critising the people that are there working hard for you free of charge, the other is to paste a link to an online dictionary that proves your point.

Personally I would just paste the link and a small explanation

Maybe you need to chill out a bit Sal you are a good reviewer with a good word knowledge it will all come out in the wash, chill out
