Today is the Ides of March. In 44 BC, Julius Caesar was stabbed to death by Marcus Junius Brutus, Gaius Cassius Longinus, Decimus Junius Brutus and several other Roman senators. OR 2. in 1917 Tsar Nicholas II abdicated the Russian throne in favor of his brother the Grand Duke. It was a bit irrelevant because the October Revolution triggered the demise of the monarchy when the Tsar's army was ordered to fire on 500,000 peaceful street protestors in Petrograd. The Tsar's replacement comprised 650 elected delegates to the Congress of Soviets, which would have been a true democratic alternative, until power-hungry factions consolidated their power in The Council of People's Commissars.
