If DVDs are playable on Blu Ray players, what will entice you to but a Blu Ray player?
*Quality of Picture
*More features on the Disc

or something else? Obviously the Media companies will eventually phase out DVD on new releases to get you to buy a Blu Ray player. Hopefully that wil not be for a while.

Just interested how many FWFRs will go for it in the near future and how many will wait a while?

Our old TV died and the replacement is a huge improvement in quality - especially when watching DVDs.

I'd love to see if Blu Ray would be even better, but I'm so happy with how these look (I have a cheapo DVD player we picked up for $40 somewhere) that I am in no hurry to try it out.

I will never buy a blu-ray. without a tv that's good enough to support the resolution, there's no difference between it and high-def dvd. I do not have a nice tv.

Also, I don't buy many movies. I can not imagine forking so much for just one movie. Furthermore, since I am a stand-up, I submit a lot of DVDs of myself to people. Blu-rays are just too expensive to make and no one has a player unless they have a ps3. I feel blu-ray is a tactic to hurt independent filmmakers.

I still have records. Needles for the turntable are a problem, so I play these odd shiny circular things in my computer. But... you have an MP3 player??

I'll get a BluRay when I finally get a Playstation 3. But that'll be a while (years, probably).

I was probably one of the last people to go from records and tapes to CD's, and I still don't own an Ipod (but have a small MP3 player that runs on a AA battery), so I don't think I'm exactly a good indicator of what will happen in the market. Edit to add that we love DVD's at our house because you don't have to rewind the dang things (useful with children that are always changing their mind)

BTW, my computer is obsolete by most corporate standards, but at least I got rid of the 486 a while back.

Blu-Ray will start to interest me when there's a completely digital film that begs me to buy it because I want to watch it over and over with the best possible pic quality.

Um, WALL-E? OK, that's one. We need more, though.

Um... sort of. A friend gave me a computer program that I can hook my VCR up to my computer and then copy the movies onto that and then transfer them onto DVDs. Not the greatest quality but still, cheaper than buying a DVD recorder that may end up being obsolete soon.

Surely there'll be a sort of iFilms system within a few years, and D.V.D.s will do fine till then.

Well, I suppose what I mean is that it's hard to buy movies on VHS these days, as it's assumed everyone has a DVD player.

Old topic on Blu-Ray here.

And what benj said. It's not worth upgrading for a small quality improvement until the players are a lot cheaper (I don't have one yet). It look a long time for VHS to disappear after everyone had a DVD player, and I can't see DVDs disappearing until Blu-Ray players and discs are priced like DVD players and discs, and have clear market saturation. I think DVDs are around for many more years.

They need to make it more affordable for one. Right now there just aren't enough benefits to justify the price difference. That's what DVD (supposedly the most quickly adopted new medium) had that Blu-Ray doesn't: considerable improvement over the previous most popular format that everyone could understand. Not having to rewind, durability and taking up less shelf space are the big ones I'd say and Blu-Ray can't offer anything better on any of those. Picture quality and sound are never going to be enough to justify almost double the cost of a medium that most people find clear enough.

Also, we need the equivalent of Gladiator or The Matrix to shift units- I can't think of any Blu-Ray releases that I feel I need to upgrade for. If there were some exclusives- maybe DVD gets the film a week or two later, then they'd definitely be in business.

Those are the main two for me (and I already own a Blu-Ray player) before I start chucking out the DVDs. In fact, I'll probably only upgrade if they stop making DVDs since I'm now copying all my DVDs to one big easily-accessed jukebox- neither DVD or Blu-Ray will every be able to compete with that.

Oh... and someone needs to crack the Blu-Ray regional coding on the scale of DVD, too.

I'm never one to jump on the new stuff bandwagon. I'll buy one when I have no choice.
