I broadened the scope of this to include Film and Tv , so I hope I wont get in trouble!
Anyway, this came to mind when i finally got around to watching the final episode of Battlestar Galactica. SPOILERS FOLLOW************
When they finally reach Earth , Presient Roslin is dying after a long illness . Adama takes her for a final trip in a shuttle over the fields at sunset to see the herds of animals running free. He looks over and she has died with a smile in her face.
Actually, I felt choked up even thinking of the scene. I will , in all likelihood, never watch it again.
Do you have a scene that "hits home"? |

Up to recently I could watch anything filmmakers could throw at me. Then I rented The Kite Runner after I had read the book, i'd hardly passed the credits when i realised that from the memory of the book i couldn't sit through the whole story again. I'll probably never watch it. |

There is little I can't watch on screen, I'm basically immune to fake violence, and hetero-sex scenes don't bother me in the least (unless they manage to avoid showing tits, then I get angry  ).
However, like damalc, I will never watch Irr�versible again because of that rape scene. I don't know why a fake rape scene is worse than a fake death scene; perhaps it's because rape scenes are usually heavily 'sanitised' (or avoided altogether) whereas death scenes are commonly gratuitous and glorified so I'm used to them?
However, male gay sex/love scenes make me turn away (or avoid the movie in the first place), I can't watch them. Ugh! Unless they involve rape, e.g., the squealing-like-a-pig scene in Deliverance doesn't bother me in the least.
So it looks like I don't mind hetero sex scenes unless rape is involved, but can't stand gay sex scenes unless rape is involved. Explain that one, Doctor!  |

i count myself as one of the most jaded movie watchers, but i think THE SCENE from "Irreversible" is the only thing i've ever FFd through. there are a couple of scenes from "Descent," starring Rosario Dawson (not the cave-monster movie) that are awful to watch. and as repulsive as the Saw movies are, the worst for me is one where a lady is thrown into a pit full of hypodermic needles. i think that series' only mission is to try to make the audicence look away.
edit: "Rollercoaster," (IN SENSURROUND) scared the crap out of me when i was about 9. i went to the bathroom and wouldnt' come back into the theater until the rumbling stopped. |

I have a number of scenes I fast forward through and just skip. But recently I got The Book of Eli from Netflix and found the opening scene just too much. Denzel Washington stalks down a cat and shoots it for food. Never again. |

Pixar manage to insert some highly poignant moments for adults into their movies. They managed to push out more heartbreak in a few minutes than many a weepie designed for adults. Yet , it is over before the children can get fidgetty.
Plus, of course , there is Jessie's song about abandonment in Toy Story 2. That one really hits the button.
Anime isnt too shabby at poignancy either. Theres a scene in "Spirited Away" where there is a train ghosting across a lake, with spirits getting on and off. Not sure why but it always gets to me. |

I agree that most sex scenes are rather jarring and serve no coherent purpose within the film. They don't faze me on my own but there are not many scenes that are not embarrassing to watch with other people. However, while most certainly are to titillate (straight) male viewers, it's not so very unusual to include ones to titillate female ones. For example, those in the Sex and the Citys undoubtedly fall into that category, and Little Children springs to mind too. |

I can't watch the rape scene in the original Mad Max. Just way too much for me.

Case in point: the sex scene in Monsters Ball? Would it have been a better film without such an explicit sex scene? It made me very uncomfortable, and I am still convinced that 99% of the reason Halle got her Oscar for it was because of her nekkid, simulated sex scene. "My kid got killed, and effing Billy will make everything all better." I thought the scene was demeaning to her character and to black women. Nonetheless, overall I like the film and think it gives us a lot of things to think about other than those issues. My heart broke for all of the characters except the narcissist grandfather whose cruelty indirectly led to the suicide of his beautiful grandson.
I include the sex scene in the second Matrix movie as one of those that are too explicit for my comfort, even though it is nowhere as raw as the one in Monsters Ball. It was supposed to, I read, illustrate the contrast between sacred and profane love. Whooptedoopte, that was just an excuse. However, I will grant you that switching to shots of fireworks overhead is dated.
Maybe the real problem for non-porn sex scenes is that it is truly very difficult to do them well? Case in point: lots of songs are, to some degree, about sex. But most of those, despite whatever popularity they have, are ordinary. Then, we have Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire." Holy schmoly, a raw, trembling, rigid hard-on passionate song about sexual desire that is sheer Art.
Back to films. One of the all-time sexiest movies ever is GiGi, and they don't even kiss!
Rhett sweeping Scarlett up the stairs was pretty sexy, yet we aren't shown the act itself.
Another scene I can't watch even though it is not explicit, is the torture of Wallace in Braveheart.

I think Old Yeller is a great movie for it's time. But I can't ever bear to watch it again. |

I assume you're talking about the new Battlestar Galactica, which I haven't seen, so I haven't read the spoiler.
In terms of emotional scenes, I don't think there's anything that I can't watch. I really struggle though with cringeworthy scenes (I often have to turn the television over for a minute) and I cannot bear to watch any kind of torture (though gore in general doesn't bother me at all). |
