Posted - 02/18/2011 : 17:08:27 I watched "Gamer" the other night. I hadn't clicked that it was a Neveldine/Taylor movie but it wasn't a surprise when the credits came up. Someone has commented on this team that " they hate the audience they are making movies for". Certainly "Gamer" and "Crank" are products of their era - fast, bright and lashy. However, there is a disturbing undercurrent.
For all the whizz-bangery of the visual imagery, underneath this surface a cauldron of sadism with a side of misogyny is bubbling. The audience for these films are presumably horny teen geeks with the attention span of a fruit fly. Crossing the music video with video games and anime should be exciting. So why do these movies feel so soul-destroying?
Because they share a lot of the debasing and dehumanising aspects of Porn. Ah, you say - isn't that the point they are trying to make with the idea of real humans playing avatars in "Second Life"? It would be charitable to suppose so but I think the directors are both servicing and mocking their target audiences.
I have no doubt they will be back, more's the pity.
