George Baker was the much beloved Inspector Wexford, the embodiment of Ruth Rendell's famous top cop.
I was privileged to have acted with him in an episode. He loved the show, largely because his real-life wife Louis Ramsey played his on screen wife, and, of course, because the series made him a household name. He was self-effacing and a generous actor.
His cinema appearances included The Dam Busters and several Bond films.
