This time Smith's riffing on (1) those GOD HATES FAGS fools [though he name-checks them in the script to make sure we understand it's not them], (2) government overreach a la Waco; and (3) believe it or not, the war on terror. Michael Parks is just riveting as the inbreeding preacher who's just like Fred Phelps, except he's put together an arsenal, like at Waco.
This one fails on so many fronts. So why is it impossible to turn away? Maybe that's Kevin Smith's real achievement here. Lotsa blood, and it's definitely not a comedy, but stream it one night and dig the sublime Michael Parks in full control. |

Posted - 11/21/2011 : 23:15:19 Michael Parks was awesome, but "Red State" just tried to do too much. It starts as a sex comedy, then turns to horror, and finally a siege. I bet that if someone walked through the room while this movie was playing, then 25 minutes later, and again 25 minutes later, they'd think it was 3 different movies. |
