Not only is Ridley Scott's newest film a return to the science fiction genre after thirty years, it's also true to the kernel that fuels all speculation: WHAT IF?

My guess is that hard-core ALIEN fans will feel somehow let down, since the slasher and torture-porn genres have constantly upped the visual ante since poor John Hurt's case of indigestion fully 33 years ago. Sheesh: now there's even a magazine that celebrates the cinematic arterial spew: FANGORIA!

You get gooey stuff here, including a bravura sequence that will make you squirm the first time you see it [as Sir John's turn atop the dinner table did in 1979], but this movie is after more than just a haunted house, and for that I guess we can cheer or blame the screenwriters, depending on our perspectives. Full disclosure: I saw this picture in 2-D. I still loved it.
