Not sure if there's already been a thread on this one, but went to see 'Stranger than Fiction' last night and thought it was one of the best new movies I've seen in a while.. curious to see what ye all thought about it? |

Sorry Bean, didn't mean to be a picky git! 'Punch-Drunk Love' is one i really liked though, always wondered why more people didn't see it..
That's cool about the short, sounds like you're setting the bar high for yourself with such themes like the deconstruction of narrative, but that's good to hear! Let us know how the production goes... |

Yes yes yes, Stranger Than Fiction is better than all the other movies you mention in your review but it probably couldn't have been made if those others hadn't been so successful.
I almost totally agree with you Bean, the only exception being 'punch-drunk love', which tanked, and probably explains much of sandler's 'safety zone' career choices since...
I had not really counted that in my sweeping statement of earlier and was just thinking of Eternal Sunshine, and the poorer Adaptation. Stranger Than fiction has got the deconstruction of the post modern narrative structure as near perfect to date. And it's very similiar in theme to a little short I am trying to get made that i nearly wept after seeing it!! |

Maybe that's it, the C4 and E4 execs are all mashed! (and definitely the E! channel, I mean, how blatant can you get!?) That could explain why all those 'Top 100 Top 100 Shows' shows are aired every week, it's the ultimate comfort TV.. familiar.. bite-sized.. requiring the attention span of a gnat! (And E4 shows music all day now...) Hmmm... |

Yep, times have changed... there's still room for the properly creative talents to shine through, but attention spans are definitely shortening. Big Brother has an awful lot to answer for.
I saw a show listed on E4 the other day: 'Top Ten most outrageous Big Brother moments'. It was an hour long. Is that it, right there, the actual lowest point that TV can go!? |

Sorry to be so late replying, PadC, just caught up with your question. Which is prob'ly academic now he's left!! Actually, since series 2 I haven't actually watched any Big Bro - just seemed to get more and more ridiculous.
Didn't even watch when my old pal Rula was on. I did once meet Ken Russell - who seemed to me like a very mischievous bearded elf. I admire him not just for his brave choices of films, but because he had the balls to challenge the system. Some of his stuff works better than others, but he's always interesting. What tempts someone like that to do trivia-tv? Well, money's a factor. And there's that other thing about how you continue on the road that branded you an enfant terrible when you were starting out. In another era, longevity was sustained by real talent, by an accumulation of achievement. It was a VERY different time. So what does someone like Russell do at the age of 70? His mind is still sharp, he still has things to say, but the industry always wants the next new thing. Some days you feel as though if you light a firecracker it will take some notice, give you another chance. Other days you just want to disappear in some quick-sand. I suppose he agreed to Big Brother on one of his firecracker days. Then, when he realized how very inane it really was, and that nothing he could say or do would make the faintest difference, and that he was seriously being asked to compete intellectually with Jade for crying out loud ... I suppose he thought the most graceful thing he could do was leave.

Yup, it's quite bizarre, isn't it? It's bizarre enough to have a 79-year-old in there. I think he'll be quite good. |

Great, thanks for the recommendation. 'Keane' looks like pretty serious stuff, but I've been watching so many comedies lately, I might actually be in the mood for something like that, for a bit of a change! Will try and track it down over the coming days...
Incidentally, BBabe, what do you think about Ken Russell being in the big brother house!? I can't believe he's actually in there.. I flicked on the coverage last night and he was talking about 'The Devils', it was actually brilliant!! He was just relaxing with a cup of tea, and explaining the plot to a guy who had never seen it (some pop star I think) but he threw in a few casual throwaway comments at the end that were excellent. He seems like a decent bloke... |

PS There's a film I'd really recommend that doesn't seem to have achieved wide distribution, probably because of its disturbing subject matter ... It's called Keane. With the range of films on your Mlog, I'd bet you give it house-room.
