I haven't seen such markedly different reviews for a full for a while. Some love it; some are scathing. I enjoyed it, but think that it doesn't quite make it. In particular, I felt that the developing relationship does not hang together well - it doesn't have any sort of proper curve to it.
However, what annoyed me more was the slight spoiler here (just in the sense that it tells you what the final shot of the film is, so it's not a spoiler proper): Jessie lies down in the pose of Venus in the painting that she and we were shown earlier in the film, and this shot then blends into a shot of the actual painting as though we would not recognise it! I cannot bear this kind of spoon-feeding - one only has to have a memory of an hour and a half!  |
