I enjoyed the DVD of the TV series "Firefly" and I watched the movie " Serenity" with knowledge of all the characters.
I'm curious about how FWFR's liked/disliked this movie if you were coming across it with no knowledge of the TV series.
QUERY WITH MAJOR SPOILER ALERT !!!!!!!!!
OK - if you havent seen it read no further .
Th fate of the Planet Miranda as a result of Alliance use of Bio-Chemicals results in the catastrophe depicted in the final scenes. Now you would have thought that they would have done a major "clean-up" to prevent this foul up ever getting discovered ( of course this would have made a fairly crappy ending !  " Here we are and theres nothing wrong , he he roll the credits"

Enjoyed Serenity alot, good semse of humour and interesting plot.
Only a few weeks later did I find out it was the end of a series, kind of dissappointed then that i hadn't watched them the other way around.
Haven't we talked about this before??????
Didn't someone say that Malcolm was like Han Solo for the noughties??
Not a Buffy nor Angel fan.
But did like the original Buffy movie. |

My problem isn't its plausibility. Well, I wouldn't call my issue plausibility as much as internal logic. If the Reavers are such insane psychopaths, why do they fly and repair ships? Why do they apparently have a society? Isn't the concept of a society where everyone is insane contradictory? I can kind of imagine it if I make my mind jump through hoops, but my other problem with it is that a zombie that can fly a spaceship is just NOT AS SCARY as a mindless drooling feasting machine.
And furthermore... Joss Whedon sucks! A lot! I hate his self-conscious cutesy dialogue; maybe a few times an episode I could take it, but any episode of Buffy is just overwhelming. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was apparently inspired by the X-Men character Kitty Pryde, who Whedon liked because she was such a young girl dealing with being a superhero. But no one on Buffy ever came close to resembling an actual teenager. They're all just mouthpieces for Whedon's self-congratulatory witty dialogue. They weren't characters, just character sketches. Sean's criticism of Firefly's character as skin-deep was right on; Whedon casts them because they look the part, not because they can act. Despite his pretenses toward teen angst, Whedon never struck me as interested in these characters any deeper than their surface attributes. He wrote about a teenage girl vampire slayer because the concept turned him on, nothing more. |

For me, after believing that mankind had mastered interstellar space travel and transformed and colonized a new solar system, "organized" space zombies were the least of my concern. This was a popcorn flick, for sure, but one I certainly enjoyed.
What about Chiwetel? I love watching him and can't get enough. Underused in Inside Man, of course, but what about Kinky Boots or Dirty Pretty Things?
Speaking of Nathan Fillion, I also loved "Slither"... |

Wow, what a coincidence, I unknowingly mentioned this one in the Hostel thread about half an hour after this thread was started! 
I was disappointed, mostly as the IMDb score was 8 so it should have been excellent, I was expecting a lot more. Never seen Firefly.
I thought the characters were skin deep and implausible, I couldn't relate to any of them. The plot was unmemorable. The FX was OK, but nothing I hadn't seen before. Overall it was OK, but nothing special at all, and just scraped through with something like a pass. I would give it 5.5/10.
I thought most other Sci-Fi is better, e.g., all Star Treks (that I've seen) were better than this, the characters had more depth and I could imagine them being real people. Serenity rates (at IMDb) higher than Close Encounters, Total Recall etc which is why I mentioned it in the Hostel thread in my IMDb score post. In my view those two are much better. |

I understand why you would think that. However, I think 'Buffy' was far too good for kids! Sometimes while watching Buffy reruns early in the morning, my macho hubby sits and watches it with me. He likes the humor. |

Saw the movie first - loved it - went out and bought the complete Firefly DVD. Easy!
The only thing that took a little while in a cinema was getting up to speed with the dialect and some of the rapid delivery of lines - I found myself missing things because it was so quick. Otherwise all the characters were strong and well defined (of course) and the action sequences were excellent - particularly River's superb martial arts. It was odd going back and watching whole storylines knowing the final fate of several of the characters though.
I'm not a Whedon fan boy incidentally - Buffy never floated my boat - bit too teenage soap for me. |

I have never seen the series but watched the film with my son, on the basis of a recommendation from one of his friends. We enjoyed it. We didn't think it was the greatest thing ever, but we were entertained and that's about all we hoped for anyhow.
I too, am a Buffy fan -- and Angel fan. |

Hated it. Hate Joss Whedon.
Oddly enough, quite liked the handful of episodes I saw. But the movie was just awful. The problems start with the horribly defined space zombies, who are supposedly violently insane and bloodthirsty, yet are well-organized and can fly a large fleet of starships.
And while on the small screen, things could be forgiven, on the large screen it's glaringly obvious that the vast majority of the cast cannot act. Mal, Wash and Zoe are the only real actors. The rest were clearly cast on looks alone.
The love crap was beyond forced. How easily the supposed government fanatic's faith was shattered also pissed me off; if he believes himself such a bad man doing the government's work, then he must realize that the government occasionally dirties its hands in other areas. No, this movie was bad. |
