Aside from Bafta, has anyone else seen this film? We went to see it on Saturday and were very impressed with it. While a tad on the slow side at spots, it was a really good film. Not at all surprised it won the Oscar.

I haven't seen it, but from the trailers it looks visually beautiful but the story looks "same-old, same-old, been there, seen that, didn't even want the t-shirt" to me. Well, maybe not "seen that", since I never bothered seeing Crouching Tiger. It is just that these films just seem stupid to me. All that slash-slashing about and humanly impossible jump-flying fighting just turns me off. I can't think of anything more boring than having to watch any of these movies.

Ok, that's good (in a way) and sort of bad too. I've heard it's by far the least impressive of the trilogy it belongs to (Hero and House of Flying Daggers being the others) but if you just don't like that sort of film, that's fine. I'm just glad you didn't see it and really hate it.

I think you're missing out though...

No, really. "Crouching Tiger" for all its impossible gravity defying jaunts is actually brilliantly acted by everyone in it, and the story is very moving - surprisingly so for what I think you, and most people, would expect. If you can just accept that there will be traditional martial arts elements there's so much to enjoy.

And the sword-fights kick ass!!

I will post my critique in a new thread later today. Threat or promise? You decide!

My condolences.

Oh no! That bad?

My husband would agree with you about finding "Lives of Others" more relevant after being in Berlin. I haven't been myself, but he was there twice. Once before the wall fell, but (of course) only on the Wester side. And again not very long after the wall fell when you could still feel the difference between the two sides, and this movie really brought that home to him again. Totally masterful.

We're going to see Pan's Labyrinth next Saturday, so I'll only know next week if it was cheated out of the Oscar or not.

Loved "The Lives of Others" - my girlfriend and I caught a preview and were captivated - the performance of Ulrich Mhe in particular is first rate. Anyone else see the resemblance to Kevin Spacey?

It had another level of interest beyond the Oscar win and my thing for foreign language movies, because the two of us were out in Berlin last month and explored a lot and visited the remains of the wall. Really great city with some very troublesome history.

It may have been because of that, or maybe just the film itself, but I found myself very moved by several parts of it. I was glad that it was that good, because I thought "Pan's Labyrinth" had probably been robbed in March.

Aside from Bafta,

PS Haven't seen it yet anyway, so nah-nah-nah-nah-nah!

You really must see it. I hardly ever go to see foreign films (thankfully, they had English subtitles so I didn't have to suffer trying, and failing to read the Hebrew), but the trailer for this one when we went to see The Queen got us so excited that we had to see it. As Sal said, it doesn't take any easy ways out and the humanism was perfectly done. A true winner!

Yeah, the trailer looked great! And it's on my list, thanks for the recommendation. Meanwhile, tomorrow is the exciting double-bill of

I really enjoyed it, although with all the hype, I suppose I expected it to be even better. I did not expect a certain angle to be in it, and it was made much better and more human by that. The ending was good, too. Spoiler: I'm glad it avoided being too saccharine and getting the two characters together.

It was last year's best film. Just a wonderful, wonderful movie.
