Posted - 06/18/2007 : 20:44:06 I have to start by revealing that this comic-book flick took over $22 million on its first day of release, so I realize anything I can say about it is pretty irrelevant.
Even so, except for a nebula-sized planet-phage called Galactacus, everything in this film is not merely thin, it's anorexic. A thimble has more depth than the characterizations of these embodiments of The Fantasic Four with their C-List powers. There is more chemistry between a rock and a hard place than exists between Reed 'Stretch' Richards and Sue Storm, his vapid, bo-toxed financee who can vanish at will ... but as much as I willed her to vanish, she just didn't! I like to think of them as Parrot-Face and Perky. Fear not, though, because these two, despite their wedding interruptus, will save the planet along with the other two of the Four, namely Storm's brother, a human torch whose function in this tall tale is - surprise, surprise - a tad light, and their rocky pal Ben, always a cairn of strength.
The threat here is heralded by a Marvel of sfx in the body of Doug Jones [who played Pan in Pan's Labyrinth], and voiced by a syrupy Laurence Fishburne. He [or should that be 'they'] is the Silver Surfer of the title, coasting in as he does over space and time from a very distant part of the universe. So there's this big gas thing, right, and it's ravenous, see, and in order to exist it needs to consume energy. Well, I don't know about you, but if I were that hungry I suspect I'd head for an energy-rich star rather than a planet, but hey, that's just me. Maybe Galactacus is on a diet.
Somehow the Surfer has to scout the way for the Big Gas Guzzler, but could it be he's really in the control of an even darker enemy of those Fab Four, none other than their old nemesis Victor Von Doom. And those, my friend, are the main ingredients for this so-called story which will all coalesce into a jolly old hour and a half through a tangle of dialogue that just takes itself far too seriously. I mean it's not like the world's going to end or anything, is it? Oh, yeah, it is ... I forgot what with those distracting scenes of the two leads planning their wedding and all. It's those pesky evil forces that just keep getting in the way.
Some of the sfx are excellent, though many seem derived from a host of predecessors, notably Star Wars. Von Doom in particular seems to have rescued his costume from Darth Vader's reject bin, and some of the chases between Johnny Storm and Silver recreate those spaceship dogfights in the very first Lucas epic. If you're a Fantastic Four fan I guess nothing's going to put you off this nonsense, and judging by the boffo b.o. there clearly are more fans than any quartet of also-ran superheroes deserves.

I thought it was just as good or even better than the first. But thats just me. Im a comic book fan and an even bigger FF fan.
I don't see how you can call yourself an Fantastic Four fan and support these movies.
I agree that it's better than the first one. But that's not saying much at all.
Same way I can be a fan of a football team even if they lose every game every season. Because I love them and I been following them so long. Even if My football team makes it to the Playoffs and to the Super Bowl and they lose in the last final moments of the game. I still will support them. (Which has actually happened!!!!! Tennessee Titans) Anyways......to connect the story to the movie. I have been a fan of the comic book for years. For it to make it to the big screen with a great cast and great stories is just enough for me to love the movie. Not to mention all the special effects. I guess you can say that it actually isnt a movie to me. Just another plane for my comic to be in.
Now I am also a fan of The Incredible Hulk. But that movie actually disappointed me. So I dont know what means. But anyways. Im a omic Geek. Just let me be. |

I'm not a Fantastic Four fan and I didn't like either film, except I agree with the consensus here that the special effects and sound design were impressive in the second one and the second one in general was miles ahead of the first one.
Does anybody else here think that the animation on the stretching guy looks really phony and cheesy, especially in the bachelor party sequence? The similar night club scene in The Mask was much better, sexier, funnier, and with more convincing effects ... and its 13 years old!!! |

Posted - 06/19/2007 : 16:02:24 Fantastic Four actually did pretty decently at the box office, I think.
quote: Some cliches work even when the audience can tell it's a cliche...but Sue's "stop putting your work ahead of me" crappola when his work is SAVING THE FREAKING WORLD was just too much.
Not to mention, isn't she supposed to be ONE OF THE HEROES? It's one thing when Mary Jane asks Spider-Man to quit; she doesn't get to do anything but sit at home and worry. But the Invisible Woman is supposed to get in there and fight with him; her shirking of duty is crossing an important line.
That said, I really liked the Silver Surfer in this movie. |

The best thing about this movie is that it's not horribly long, which far too many comic book movies are these days. But there's very little else to say about this that's positive.
I don't even understand why I went to see it. Just as my FWFR says, I found the first film to be Fantastic Bore. And if memory serves, it wasn't even very successful at the box office...but I guess the DVD era along with Netflix and On-Demand have made it possible for films that don't overwhelm at the box office to be financially successful anyway, and I shouldn't complain about that...otherwise, they wouldn't be making another Superman movie, and I loved the last one. |

There are other things wrong with this movie, but seriously, the Fantasti-Car has a Dodge Ram logo on the hood. |

Posted - 06/18/2007 : 21:19:14 Poor old Doug Jones, sfx body for hire. When is he going to get to speak his own part in a massive blockbuster? He can add this one to Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy. |
