Posted - 07/31/2007 : 23:56:05 This weeks trip to the Bargain Bin resulted in the purchase of KKBB. What sold it to me ( apart from the price ) was the fact that it was written and directed by Shane Black . He has always struck me as interesting writer so i took the plunge.
Firstly , its not as clever as it thinks it is. Secondly its still headand shoulders above a lot of other noir re-works.
The voiceover and trick timing is ok altho the conceit of talking to the audience is a fine line. Its done less showily and better in Alfie ( the Caine version of course! ).
Robert Downey turns in a quite likeable performance of a flawed white knight - so to that extent he is another version of the Raymond Chandler PI that his character aspires to . At times he is chanelling Dustin Hoffman but thats acceptable ( just - imagine a film with Hoffman , Downey and Cage in full-on twitch and tic mode! )
Val Kilmer turns in a good performance too , thankfully amping down the camp .
Michelle Monaghan is very believable . I liked the way she reacted like a real person insofar as she didnt melt into Robert Downey's arms .
The dialogue was a little self-concious . Everyone wishes they could talk like that without a script.
Overall a little different from normal and a nice spin on the noir. Look forward to more from Shane Black |

Posted - 08/01/2007 : 01:02:58 I enjoyed this film because the Downey character was set up as a loser from the start, and it was enjoyable watching how he tried to get himself out of trouble with always his self-interest at heart. I also enjoyed Kilmer's performance. The play off between the two was fun. Also, as with the classic film noir films, you never actually know who is telling the truth. |
