Curious for people's impressions of The Believer with Ryan Gosling

I think it's a frustrating little movie. Gosling's very good in it, but the plot is maddeningly unfocused. Why does (spoilers) Gosling sacrifice himself? Why does the puke-licking girlfriend convert? What was with the self-immolating speech in front of the fascist conference? There's a lot of contradictions in this movie that don't add up a whole person, or a whole picture. The flashbacks? The ending? Ugh. I can't recommend it. Still, there's some great scenes, like the one where he confronts the Holocaust survivors and they tell him what a stupid, sheltered American he is. |

Okay... it seems I have to reply to my own post...has no-one else seen this film? Ryan Gosling's first big role, and he's excellent in it as a Jewish neo-nazi...based on a true story from New York in the 1960's....in many ways a harrowing, depressing film about bigotry and self-hatred, but also an excellent examination of a troubled kid being pulled between two worlds...it reminded me (a little) of Alan Clarke's Made in Britain...I haven't seen American History X so I can't comment if this is better or worse. The DVD has a couple of interesting extras including a very useful documentary from the Sundance Channel about how one crucial scene in the film was put together.
