I'm just saying, just on the surface, Iron Man is interesting.
Also, I'm sure it will be a better action movie than Transformers, because the action sequences in Transformers blew. Particularly the last one. And if you go back to the Transformers movie thread, I was starting to get excited for it before I saw it. I had many reasons for hating Transformers -- so very, very many reasons -- but an implausible premise was not one of them.
I think he's suggesting that based on your complaints about Transformers, you're likely to end up hating this movie, too.
Don't see why someone would think that. I don't object on principle to robot men fighting. |

Looks a bit like 'The Rocketeer' all grown up and really angry.
But it looks good. |

For a little history, Tony "Iron Man" Stark is a defense industrialist who becomes a superhero after taking some shrapnel in the chest in the early days of the Vietnam War and being captured by Vietnam rebels. Rather than building them a superweapon, he invents a suit of armor that will keep him alive and allow him to escape. He later uses it to fight evil generals and war criminals and so on.
Of course, that all happened in 1964. A few short years later, the American public was much less interested in supporting a rich, jingoist, bomb-building, war-happy superhero, which meant that Iron Man had to change with the times, leading to a lot of philosophizing on Stark's part about the morality of war and manufacturing weapons for a living.
So basically, the timing couldn't be more perfect for an Iron Man movie, with the debate about wars and defense industries currently filling a billion different lame blogs. I'm curious to see where they will take the character. The early footage of pre-superhero Stark being a jackass seems to indicate that the character will undergo a change of heart and learn to fight the noble fight instead of the ugly one we're currently fighting in Iraq. Then again, Iron Man has always been the most right-wing of superheroes; in the current comic books, he's actually the Bush administration's Secretary of Defense.
Also exciting is that Iron Man's most notable story arc has been his struggle with alcoholism, which makes the choice of former coke addict and tabloid fixture Robert Downey Jr. an inspired bit of stunt casting. I honestly cannot wait to see this movie.
You confuse me. A man in an Iron Suit flying around saving the world you can grasp. BUt, You can do without Transforming Talking Cars. I sure hope Iron Man won't disappoint you.
Dont get me wrong....Im a comic book fan. But superheores like Batman and Iron Man...Sure they have inner demons. But All I want is a good action packed superhero movie. They dont have any actual Super Powers..and we are to beleieve they always get the job done. |

They're obviously keeping the "Demon in a bottle" storyline for the later films (if there are any), but there's a hint of his alcoholism right there in the trailer where one can spy Stark clutching to a glass of scotch right after the demonstration in the desert.
Favreau is a right winger, and supported the war in Iraq. It's an interesting mixture for an Iron Man film, overall. I, too, can't wait.

Well, he doesn't have to wear the suit all the time like RoboCop. He is stuck with a chestplate he has to wear always, but that can fit under his shirt. Anyway, eventually he gets a heart transplant too. |

Posted - 09/12/2007 : 21:03:05 Thanks for the info, MisterBadIdea. I didn't know anything about the character, as I had moved away from comics by that time. It's funny, my sons were never into comic books as much as my generation. They were more into the television/film versions of the comic book characters. |

I liked Iron Man a lot when I was a kid, but this movie looks too violent for my taste. I remember the character to be a little darker than Spider-Man, but not as dark as Batman. I imagined something closer to James Bond or Transformers when I heard they were making a feature. |
