Posted - 10/11/2007 : 01:52:04 Brian De Palma's new one is CASUALTIES OF WAR in Iraq, except that he's given it a documentary/Internet immediacy that rings true the very moment you watch it. It's about the spoon-fed lies versus the truth on the ground. It's very tough, difficult to watch at times, particularly at the end when the director eschews fiction and simply presents a grim montage of actual Iraq carnage. I'd never seen any of the cast members before, but I will again, I guarantee.
On a personal note, I found myself standing near the director waiting for the elevator before tonight's NYFF screening, he caught my eye and lifted his head, and I walked forward. Turns out I must have resembled someone he knew, but as I identified myself I did get to shake Mr. De Palma's hand and tell him how much I've admired his work over the years.
This one is a sensation, one of the happy surprises of the festival for us.
EDIT: P.S.: An absolutely beautiful short opened the evening. |

Well, Fahrenheit 911 came here about a year after it was out on video, I think...
We can always hope!
(but hey, we got to see Bean's holiday)

I won't comment on the video clip (that I posted) because I haven't seen the film, but I think you're right about the straw man - folks (especially on the internet) love to argue about things they don't even know about, just to raise a fuss.
Too bad the movie will never play here, I'l have to wait to get it on video.
I used to live in a backwater town down South. All I can say is, thank heaven for home video. No matter where you live in the US, these days you can eventually see any damn movie you want to, and that's absolutely wonderful. But are you sure REDACTED will pass you by? [It won't pass by my former hometown...] |

found the video, which I found from this article.
The comments are very interesting, too...
Wow. Now I can comment.
This exchange did not happen on the night I saw the film. But unlike other netizens who are apparently getting into the argument prematurely, I have indeed actually seen the flick. I even had a discussion with Ms. Randall over whether the redacted montage at the end of the film was more powerful with or without the redactations. I said, less powerful. She said, just as powerful, even more -- but mind you, we were both shaken from the film experience we'd just undergone.
I think this "debate" is a Summerisle-styled straw man. The decision to use actual Iraq images at the end is intended to illustrate what the title card ascribes to "Collateral Damage." These are civilians. Doesn't matter whether their eyes are redacted or not: the point is made.
More fwiffers have to see this one before we can begin to talk about it. |

I heard there was a bit of a shouting match between Brian and someone in the audience during a press conference, but now I can't remember where I read it (hence no linky)
I wanna see this one.
That didn't happen at the 10/10 NYFF screening. But this movie is so incendiary that it could have! Do not dare miss it.
[I'm still geekily thrilled that I got to say hi to the maestro. Ms. Randall, who was already in her seat waiting for me, said, "Oh, that's nice," before the lights went down. When they came back up again, she said, "What did he say to you?"] |
