There's a new edit of this film opening tonight (Oct 26) in NY and Los Angeles.

The film is well described in the lengthy user comment from Chris Docker which definitely contains spoilers.

There are reviews in the NY Times and Los Angeles Times and elsewhere today. The filmmaker, Milena Kaneva, has enlisted me to speak after the 8pm showing at the Fairfax Cinema in Los Angeles.

In New York, they'll have Vaclav Havel tonight, so I feel bad for those in L.A. This is a very moving story about a situation into which I was drawn beginning in late 1993. I'm pictured briefly in the court audience, but not featured. The more important story, that of the human rights hero Ka Hsaw Wa and the courageous plaintiffs in a landmark human rights lawsuit again Unocal Corporation, now owned by Chevron, is presented brilliantly.

Please see it if you get a chance.

Flyer here for Los Angeles, and please check the theater websites for actual show times.

Aw, Sludge, I wish you would have started this thread earlier in the week. I would have loved to hear you speak at the Fairfax, but I already made plans tonight. Good luck with the event!

Sludgie, too late to dash out tonight, but I wish you and the film the absolute best.

Actually I have been very preoccupied with the Burma stuff and haven't been doing much FWFR since September. My wife's family is very close to the "88 Generation Student" people who were recently arrested and have not been released. They've even taken the owner of the property where Htay Kywe, the last key member to be arrested, was staying.

If you check out the schedule, let me know via email which night you want to go and we can figure something out. The filmmaker will be on hand beginning Tuesday. Saturday and Sunday one of the attorneys will probably speak.

Basically, volunteer grassroots organizer in campaigns aimed at persuading the energy companies not to do deals with the military regime, then providing them with the constant stream of human rights reports when their projects started causing human rights problems (pipeline security forces, literally government soldiers, were raping, torturing and putting villagers into forced labor). It was on the basis of a few of these incidents that the lawsuit described in the film was filed.
