Looks like Godzilla meets The Blair Witch Project and from J.J. Abrams you can expect a couple of surprises. |

I had to watch a few times - its almost invisible - how did anyone spot this? |

Posted - 07/14/2008 : 01:09:54 SPOILERS - he I must be the last person to watch this!
I just watched it on DVD. Well , it was a lot more gripping than similar movies like Godzilla. There were no longeurs , it was all action. You were right in the action all the time care of the handicam ( rather too steady at times a-hem ). What was wildly implausible was the "rescue" - I suppose it wouldnt have made much of a pic if they had gotten choppered to safety . Why do movie characters do these things - the same thing happens in "Miracle Mile ". You are shouting " Get the **** out "
Theres enough about the handicam style - I think it might stand up as a film of it's time ( it will be intersting to see in a few years time if it dates stylishly ). The zeitgeist that it captures is as apparent as the 50s monster movies - which werent really about monsters at all. Tthis is an allegory of the fears that people have about the many enemies the west faces today. Firepower isnt enough as the film shows - the monster" gets through.
Thought the wee creatures were a bit "Alien" and a little derivative. Provided some schlocky horror tho.
All in all , a nice taut little film showing that todays media savvy crowds can still go for Jaws type thrills. |

I just saw this last night and had managed to avoid all chatter and snippets.
Not a bad exectuion for what they were aiming at.
On the upper level I enjoyed the anonimity of the characters and the silly mistakes they made and the military being such a sidlined character/plot device. The total confusion on the ground level and how it was very much like being stuck in the middle of a war zone (replace big monsters with a human enemy). On the lower level I loved when she blew up after being biitten and bits of New York hurtling past them and the general mayhem. |

Posted - 02/10/2008 : 01:57:43 I won't have to pay. I'll just pop into the end of a screening before I see a different film at Cineworld. |

Anyone else stick around for the post-credits sound-bite?
Damn, I hate when there's a bit at the end that I miss. I'll go back and see it.
Don't worry- you didn't miss much. Here's a link if you'd rather not pay another tenner for 3 seconds of static-y audio...

What's the reason for the title?
It was a working title for the film during production, designed to give nothing away (other titles included, bizarrely, 'Cheese' and 'Chocolate'). When it came to settling on the title later, they went with 'Cloverfield' because it sounded like it could conceiveably be the name of a government experiment and they couldn't think of anything better. The director also liked the incongruity of the name versus this big all-destroying creature.
And the origin of the name 'Cloverfield' in the first place? It's the name of a boulevard near Bad Robot's production office.

I accept that none of the elements are particularly innovative, but it is fast-paced and enjoyable. I couldn't care less about monsters so found it quite convenient for the monster to only be seen in glances. Yes, the idea of capturing the whole experience on camcorder is implausible, but is it more implausible than such a monster existing?! I don't think so. The new footage being recorded over the old footage worked well for me. It was also a good move to use (almost) unknown actors - more expensive ones would have had no purpose other than as a box-office draw.

Posted - 12/24/2007 : 11:57:04 It's not. There were, indeed, rumours that the film would be linked to the Cthulhu mythos. They have since turned out to be horseshit.
