I saw it today and didn't hate it at all. I got the premise immediately, and though there were lots of character actions which upon reflection would be thought stupid, it played verite pandemonium quite well, since I was able to hold on to three or four major characters throughout the mayhem. I think the BLAIR WITCH Internet-marketing trope has now been officially called to rest, and the recently announced CLOVERFIELD 2 will have to find a new way to avoid BLAIR WITCH 2's hellbound fate -- there's no way to repeat it!

I've been trying desperately to avoid hearing about this film (or, more to the point, the aggressor in question). Sadly, with staggered release dates, this is going to prove very difficult. Here in the UK, we have to somehow avoid hearing anything revealing about this 'No 1 in the US' film for the next two weeks despite all the internet coverage it's now getting.
I accidentally caught sight of a workmate looking at images of said NYC-destroyer recently, and even the bloody BBC gave away the identity of it in it's briefing on the US top 10 today!
I despair... I long for the days when you could go to see a film and be genuinely surprised  |

I saw it.
Basically, it's a good monster movie -- and not much more than a good monster movie. The decision to shoot in first person POV with a handheld camera successfully takes the shifts the focus from the only vaguely defined giant monster to the characters, but really it's about the camera more than anything. It worked better for "The Blair Witch Project" because nothing happens in "The Blair Witch Project"; in "Cloverfield," there are large stretches where it's just implausible to keep the camera running, facing forward and in focus, while the entire city explodes around it. The movie goes for realism but doesn't go all the way with it, it's just a technique for strategically concealing information, and too strategically in my opinion.
The plot is pretty standard, if you've seen any horror movie. I won't deny that the technique works a lot of the time, it's gripping and intense. Not exactly a worldchanger but it does its job. |
