Posted - 10/10/2008 : 22:34:40 Here's a little gem of a movie starring Marianne Faithfull as Maggie, a widow who needs to find money to help send her son, daughter-in-law and grandson to Australia in order for the grandson to get some new treatment for his cancer. While slow moving and very atmospheric, we watch Maggie find a job as a "hostess" in a sex shop. No, she doesn't have sex with the customers. Instead, the boss Miki finds her soft hands perfect for her to masterbate them through a hole in the wall. As she becomes more popular, she gets the "stage name" of Irina Palm, and with that, she can strike a deal with him to advance her 6000 pounds for the grandson's trip. What makes this such a lovely movie is how we watch Maggie's attitude change towards this unusual way to earn money, while we also catch her relationship with her boss develop as well. Moreover, only once does she use the sympathy card of her dieing grandson - and that's before she gets the job, when she tries to get a loan from a bank. Of course, things aren't perfect, and the problems she faces with her neighbours, son and a coworker are also portrayed with quiet grace and intelligence. This lovely little film is one to watch out for and I enjoyed even the slower bits. |
