I thought there was a thread for this already, but I can't find one.
Saw this over the weekend (instead of Night at the Museum or Up or Angels / Demons)
I had fun, because I like apocalyptic sci-fi in general and terminator movies in particular. Not because terminator movies are always great (usually the opposite) but because the premise intrigues me: that a computer can become smart enough to feel that humans are a threat that must be eliminated, but not smart enough to find another solution beyond war.
Without giving away spoilers, this movie had some great action sequences, really cool motorcycles, some rather silly dialogue, quite a few loose ends or WTF moments, some choppy editing, and did I mention the motorcycles? Probably my favorite part.

begining to think i should go to mbi for movie recomendations.
Watched this last week and frustrated the hell out of my wife by complaining loudly through the whole dvd-sitting about just how crap it was
As a standalone action flick it might have been 'bad but passable for a couple of hours', but Terminator is one of my all-time favourite movies, and as with T2 this film didn't deserve the "Terminator" title.
Haven't seen number 3, don;t think i will! |

Sam Worthington the only thing worth remembering from this CGI showreel. I was hoping for a twist ( as suggested above )to keep him in the franchise. Ironically, he was the most human character in a movie full of off-key or uninvolving characters . You could imagine going into battle for him and telling Bale's shouter to jump in a lake.
As for those wretched sub-transformers ( cyclobots and fishiebots ) the less said the better. Except that this was toy advertising!
How this franchise has degenerated.
BTW considering the planet has been devastated , isn't it nice and sunny? Everyone looks fairly healthy and not mutated. Theres even an air force - like the machines have no ability to spot an airfield.
Frustrating , uninvolving and unfortunately charisma-lite Bale will be back. |

Actually, the original ending of T4 was to have been that Connor dies, but lives on through the endlessly looping Radio Free Europe broadcasts, which is why everyone thinks he leads the rebellion. It would have been a highly unsatisfying but gutsy move reminiscent of the ending of the very underrated Terminator 3. It certainly would have been something to chew on, rather than just being the unrelenting moron-fest it was otherwise. |

i thought a nifty twist would have been for the John Connor to die and have the Marcus Wright-Terminator take on his name and ultimately defeat the machines. |

Seen it now.
Definitely better than the previous one and worse than the other two. I just kept playing this in my head instead in order to entertain myself.
I didn't like the robomotos so much. I wasn't quite sure, but it seemed like when they fell over they couldn't (easily) get back up, and I hate stupid designs in sci-fi films.
I like ridiculously elaborate traps in cute things like Swiss Family Robinson, but how long would it have taken those two kids to lift up a heavy enough load to squash that massive robot when we first meet them? Silly, silly, silly.
And what's with the inexplicably mute child? Kyle signs to her in the first scene, but it becomes immediately apparent that she is not deaf. She doesn't seem traumatised in any way; they could have at least offered that as an explanation, but why not just let her speak? Spuriously enigmatic. Dumb, you might say. |

In response to your 'hidden' query above demonic - I think that Skynet HAS seen the other two movies so to speak.
Here's the time paradox headache but the suped-up worthington terminator is either a result of the three terminators being sent back in time (remember T2 when skynet worker says that the chip from the first one made them think about computers in new ways) well these new events have unfolded because of(maybe?)
1) un self aware terminator with a heart (ha!) and other internal organs that is too good as a huiman and rebels agains skynet. Then Skynet gets blown up and looses alot of it's capability and will take some time to get back to the level it had reached, (Connors hadn't seen the organ filled terminators before as the other terminators were all machine inside with skin outside.)
2) Skynet knowing about kyle reese, he would have been in police records and Skynet seems to have acess to anything it wants.
(Personally I thought it would have been a great plot twist if Worthingterminator had been from another distant future by an older John Connors, but alas they didn't ask me to write the script!!)
But it doesn't explain why they didn't just kill him once they found him, my only reasoning for this is that there wouldn't have been much of a plot left to hanf on to if several of the main characters ceased to exist!

That's a damn good point. I agree with MBI - it was stupid that Kyle wasn't instantly crushed when he was identified - at which point John Connor would cease to exist, negating the need to lure him in. These films stand and fall on their logic and The Terminator movies have never been the most watertight of paradoxes. Another thing that bothered me - what was all that "what are you - we've never seen anything like you before" business when John Connor spent a rather memorable part of his childhood alongside a rather familiar looking man/machine that became a father figure to him? Pretty dumb when you're overtly referencing T1 and T2 in such shameless fashion.
Something I don't understand - Sam Worthington's infiltrator model was infinitely more sophisticated a design than the "new" Arnie style T-800 model - with a real heart and trustworthy traits - why on earth is the T-800 a backward step from that when the best way to infiltrate is with the Worthington model? It must be ten years before they send Kyle back into the past - why is the clunking model going back and not the streamlined almost undetectable semi-human?
For all the flaws though I liked it a hell of a lot more than I expected to - actually quite a lot. It's been given a major drubbing in all the press I've seen - so I was expecting much worse. It was stylishly shot, the action sequences were impressive, as was the general art direction and machine design. Like most I really enjoyed the big robot attacking in the desert and rig/bike chase, and I particularly loved the retro T-800 effects - the final fight sequence was like watching the first film again (just not as scary or tense)- hooray for mechanical SFX and Stan Winston's awesome exoskeleton. It was always the star of these films and was given proper screentime. The acting was poor, as was the script (so tired of Christian Bale now, doesn't bode well for Public Enemies), but the crunchy, blow-up, robot fighting, run away stuff was all solid.
All in all a shit load better than T3 I thought, and by no means a wasted evenings entertainment. |

For that matter, the Reese plotline makes no sense at all, since at the time of the movie, John is just another soldier (and one that the other commanders don't like). There isn't a time machine yet.
At this point, why does Skynet think he's even remotely a threat?
Unless Skynet had seen the first movie.

Hated it. Hated it, hated it, hated it. God, it's been a bad summer movie season, and after last year's fantastic summer movie season too.
The helicopter scene, I guess, stands up, the action sequences aren't bad per se, but it's tough to give a shit when the material is so unengaging, the performances so undeniably bad, the plot so awful and nonsensical (Why don't they just kill Kyle Reese when they capture him??).
Just about the only thing I enjoyed is the cheesy shoutouts to the first two movies. Those I managed to enjoy, in a way I'm not proud of. |

The Salinger article is great!!
I agree with what you are saying about cloverfield/transformers; the camera work really brings you into the action there's a great helicopter crash from the inside.
And just everything about the nasty robots are wicked and fun. |
