Year One
Hey, here's an idea to assure that Darwinists and creationists get an equal bite of the historical cherry. Let's mix-up some stuff about the garden of eden with the hunter-gatherer tribes of the fertile crescent and throw in some pre-christian idol worshippers. That should straighten out the history curriculum.
Okay, anachronisms aside -- and, listen, I'm not saying that scenerio couldn't actually work, especially as a comic device -- and despite boasting Harold Ramis and Michael Cera doing his underplay schtick, and Jack Black forgetting he used to be funny -- well, what should have been a comic souffle comes out flat and charred.
Yes, yes, I did actually laugh a few times, but the targets are too easy and the whole thing just ain't funny enough to sustain more than a sketch or two on SNL. It's partly because you don't really care about the people, but mostly it's because the writing isn't sharp enough.
Year One? Well, who's counting?

Here's one where low expectations work in its *favor*. I'm not recommending this picture -- there are many, many, many, many, many better ways to spend an hour and a half -- but this two-bit Old Testament LIFE OF BRIAN is very frequently funnier than I'd expected. Forget the two leads. It's the lesser parts that actually work: Bill Hader, Hank Azaria, David Cross, Paul Rudd, etc. A sometimes-pleasant surprise.
P.S. And Baffy, I thought it was the writing of such scenes which *made* them work. |

In all honesty, I'm not sure I like the Movie-from-a-TV-series trend all that much. We watched Sex and the City last night as it was on TV, and now I'm glad I didn't bother paying money for it in the theatres. It was cute, but ultimately, not nearly as good as the series itself - which we watched faithfully. If I take my favourite TV shows and think about them as movies - well, I'm afraid the word "ugh" is all that comes to mind. As for AD, while I watched it quite a bit in the beginning, I missed quite a bit due to fights over which service here would run them, and haven't seen much more than about season 3. I think there's far too much that goes on in that show to make it into anything really effectively good - which was one of the problems with SatC, so they settled for redoing exactly what they did throughout the whole show. Not satisfying.

Ugh. I keep saying that I hope The Hangover wipes away the current generation of comedy superstars, and movies like this are why. There aren't jokes in this movie -- Ramis's entire plan appears to be to put Jack Black in a situation and have him blither some adlibs. In one case, where there was clearly meant to be an amusing line, Black doesn't even say anything, he just makes faces and grunts something that sounds like words but aren't.
And... did he bring independent humanism to Sodom and Gomorrah? Did he cure them of religion?? Does God simply not destroy it? What happened to the pillars of flame and all that?
At least David Cross is funny. "You know what my favorite thing about Sodom is? The sodomy!" |

The title sets it up for a sequel but I'm guessing that isn't going to happen.
As B.B. says, the movement between periods/locations/level of fact could have worked but it just isn't done with enough commitment. I'd prefer to see them walking around a corner and everything suddenly being in a different style.
On the upside, as has been noted elsewhere, if this has enabled the Arrested Development film, then I can live with it. |
