The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
In some ways very much a stock thriller (a genre I like but have become a bit tired of the prevalent predictability within which lately), but even though I was exhausted (hadn't slept the previous night and then had had an interview in the afternoon), it kept my attention and engagement throughout.
I love listening to Swedish, it's nicely shot, the plot developments aren't too twee or stupid (in the main) and it has a great anti-heroine.
A low 5/5. |

Part two of our mini film fest.
We had read the books, and were keen to see the film. Parts 2 and 3 will follow at a later date.
This one had all the main elements of the books, rattled along for 150 minutes without boring us, and the main characters were played very nicely. Some of the minor plot lines from the book were missing, but that's only to be expected. All in all, a good evenings entertainment, and worth a look if you haven't seen it yet.
I will probably avoid the Hollywood remake, as I don't now (and never did) imagine Kalle Blomquist looking like Daniel Craig. |

OK, I watched/read in this order:-
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (movie) 9/10
Girl who Played with Fire (movie) 7/10
I read the trilogy over the last couple of weeks, it was the most un-puttable down fiction I've read for rather a long time; I finished yesterday. The second and third books are a single 1500-page story split into two books. The third book in particular was extremely gripping.
The Millennium Trilogy (books) 9/10
So, I've just watched The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. Watching it the day after reading the book was deflating, to say the least. It felt like a mechanical succession of bullet points. I.e., imagine someone went through the book, highlighted all the important plot points while skipping character development, characters's thoughts and 'unimportant' subplots, then you skim read what they've highlighted.
While reading the book yesterday I couldn't help but think on a few occasions "Shit, how are they gonna make a good movie out of this?" I guess there was just too much intrigue and tension and not enough action to simply plug into a movie machine and expect results. It would not surprise me in the least if David Fincher et. al. do a better job of it, I really can't see them doing a shot-for-shot remake (as they'd be perfectly justified in doing for the Dragon Tattoo remake); they'd be well advised to go back to the drawing board. Perhaps - when not compared to the book - this final episode was better than I make out, but if you've read the book recently then I really can't see much point bothering with this one.

The Girl Who Played with Fire
In all honesty, it didn't grip me as much as the first film, but I guess that's a natural consequence of being the mid-film in a trilogy. However, the characters have my loyalty and it certainly hasn't put me off.

Haven't seen the movie yet - it's on the to-do list.
Go read the books, all three of them. Fantastic stuff, and it's a shame that there won't be any more. |

Yep, very much a stock thriller, but a most excellent example nonetheless. The girl's character elevated it above most in this genre.

Here it is now: it was removed for some reason.
I submitted a review for the English-language film which referred to the Swedish one (in the broadest and most obvious terms), but was told that people won't put these identically named adaptations of the famous novel together in two years' time. |
