Casablanca

I saw it yesterday for the first time, in a tiny little screen in an art cinema.

I felt relieved to really, really enjoy it and felt that it hadn't dated at all badly compared to most films from that time (although it's really hard to imagine people talking like that now, and some of the European accents are rather bizarre). I had no idea that so many famous quotations were from it (although I did know about the non-quotation), and didn't previously know to what "You'll regret it: maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of your life", "We'll always have Paris", "Round up the usual suspects" and "This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship" referred. (A downside of that is that some of them are not delivered as well in the film as when I have heard them elsewhere.)

Good choice of favourite film, lemmy.

And an American film.

What has that got to do with the price of fish? Shall I go round saying "Too American" every time you use American spelling or the word Brit in a review for a British film? I'd never have time to do anything else!

Hmmmm...good idea!

I don't get that one.

A saloon is a type of car. A Renault is a type of car. He gets rid of his saloon and goes off with Renault.

Too British.

If anything, it rather nicely reflects the international hodge-podge (both in terms of characters and the actors playing them) of the film. I'd certainly vote for an equally good review punning on sedan, even if the film were wholly European. It's just that Americans are much less familiar with British English than we are with American English; this is still a British website, though.

Roger Ebert has an excellent commentary on the DVD.

Don't forget the misquote that everyone thinks is "Play it again, Sam." Which is actually:

Rick: You played it for her, you can play it for me!
Sam: [lying] Well, I don't think I can remember...
Rick: If she can stand it, I can! Play it!

Better late than never. Guess I should watch this again at some stage.
