These movies have little to do with each other, but I saw both this weekend and a common theme emerged. I would have enjoyed both more if I hadn't seen previous projects by their creators.
I liked both, but during almost all of "Colombiana," I was thinking, "this is 'The Professional,'" and I didn't know until the end credits that it was a Besson film. "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" had the same mood and some of the same devices from "Pan's Labyrinth" and "The Orphanage."
I got the same diminishing effect from "Casino" after "Goodfellas," and almost everything by Dario Argento. I enjoyed all those, just not as much as if I hadn't seen the similar previous works.

Del Toro has always had a squishy relationshp with insects; I think he's an entomophobe and loves passing this fear along to us. Thus, especially in the climax, the little critters are more like big bugs than little demons. Del Toro co-wrote and co-produced, so you would expect to see plenty of his touches here.

I read that Columbiana was adapted from a script that Besson had for " The Professional 2". However it appears that it never got off the ground - tho its not known if Natalie Portman was ever approached.
