Posted - 01/22/2013 : 16:16:17 Hey guys -
I have been thinking a lot about the idea of a FWFR app since GHcool brought it up in another thread (and apologies for starting a new thread here but I wanted to keep it separate) and have been struck with the conviction that an iOS app, properly positioned, would be a great boon to the site in its growth. The problem is, if the app was entirely centred on writing and reading reviews, we'd have a hard time hooking new users, since the frustrating days or longer wait for reviews to be approved can often turn off new users. I was thinking that rather than leading with the ability to write reviews, perhaps setting it up as a gamified app might be of greater general appeal? What I mean by this is that I feel that offering an app which is primarily a quiz-style idea, based directly on the 'Which Film?' speech bubbles that already appear on the site, would be a good time-waster app that might draw people in to the idea of what the site is.
The next thought I had would be, what if we offered categories: so not only guess the film, but to take advantage of our back catalogue of FWTR and FWPT winners, and offer an opportunity for people to guess who we're burying/pornifying? Maybe on each question asked there might be options to guess from, but maybe that makes it too easy? Selecting radio buttons would certainly make it low maintenance.
Anyway. The idea of gamifying FWFR - it's in my head at the moment because the research project I am working on is centred on gamifying a series of Shakespeare stories - might hook in new users who have downloaded the app, and once they've seen the variety of options available, we could then say 'love the app? come write your own reviews!'.
I know there will be resistance on this and I know that I'm not the one writing the code, but I thought this might be a good step forward to make a potential iOS (or Android) app more active, rather than the fairly passive site we have at the moment. A game gives immediate satisfaction without having to wait for the MERPs to get to your review. Thoughts? |

My FAVORITE game in the known universe. Did I tell you I once had the chance to ask Kevin Bacon whether it was really him on the phonecall ... yes it was!! Last time I heard Jellyvision was going through some tough times, but maybe they've got it together. Great idea, Sludge!

Posted - 01/23/2013 : 14:18:23 Instead of quizzes with multiple choice, I was thinking another way. A way that people all across the world like to play. Everyone in the world does this in the morning. There are places dedicated to playing to this. They even do this in the morning while reading the newspaper. What about a crossword puzzle app. Im not real familiar with apps, is the crossword puzzle apps? I dont mean the traditional crosswords where all words are connected. Im talking about the easier ones where some letters are connected. I think a gaming app would be great. Maybe we should come up with different types of game shows, puzzles, etc and then vote on which should be used. |

Posted - 01/22/2013 : 21:42:33 There's a link on the FWTO page each week, on the posting that lists all the entries etc. Cheese_Ed updates it on an irregular basis. It's in the form of an Excel spreadsheet, and I think it also contains a list of all the entries, not Just the winners.
Changing tack, could Rockgolf's Sporcle quizzes be adapted somehow? |

Posted - 01/22/2013 : 19:29:00 I think there's been a fairly comprehensive database of winners of both contests, hasn't there? I think they're all stored in a fourum document, but someone who knows better than I do will be able to speak to that. |

Posted - 01/22/2013 : 17:42:42 Yep, nice idea. The only problem as I see it presently is that the FWPTs and so on aren't stored in the database in the same way that reviews are (i.e. easily extractable)- they're presently in the midst of conversations in the fourum. Basically, someone would need to key them in in a form that the app could dip into easily. Likewise, multiple choices, though great for the end user, need to be thought up and entered by someone.
Definitely interested to hear further thoughts/ suggestions on this and the app in general. |

I think this is an ace idea! And, even tho I don't personally use these newfangled contraptions [what's wrong with carrier pigeons, I say!!] - I'm sure it would be a terrific hook to capture all those film fans out there.
Let's see what Mr benj sez
