After seeing this film, I now understand why it was nominated for an Oscar. Aside from "Waltz with Bashir" this could very well be the best Israeli film I've ever seen. Here's my review. |

Nice job, Chocky! I saw a trailer on another DVD and was intrigued. It's high on my Netflix list now. |

We saw it tonite, and while there's definitely artistry on both sides of the camera, I must say I didn't feel it delivered on its own trailer, which made it look more like a comic mistaken-identity romp. The final :30, which is way off somewhere else, is IMO definitely wanting, and the very last shot is a classic WTF?
Don't get me wrong, I can see why the producers were very proud of it, and rightly so. It just left me much colder than I expected. Best Israeli film *I've* ever seen? That honor still belongs to THE BAND'S VISIT. |

Yes I did, at the New York Film Festival [alongside an artist friend who is a native Iraqi!], and it was truly magnificent. I still loved those Egyptian musical [and so human] schmucks better, however.
Please don't misinterpret my reserved comment on FOOTNOTE as a thumbs-down. My thumbs are way up! I'd only imagined a different movie before I saw it, so from my limited perch I can't grant it Greatest Israeli Movie Ever, not even GIM That I Myself Have Seen! This is the wonderment of international cinema. The really good movies, like both FOOTNOTE and BAND'S VISIT, illustrate a simple but profound premise: people are alike all over. |

Just added to netflix queue...
and I was curious, so I had a look on IMDb to see what Israeli movies I've seen, there are only eight. I've either scored them 7 or 8 (pretty good to very good). Here they are...
8/10 Walk on Water (2004) Live and Become (2005) Fateless (2005) Waltz with Bashir (2008)
7/10 Paradise Now (2005) The Band's Visit (2007) Lemon Tree (2008) Lebanon (2009)
