Threes are always tricky. Especially if the first was funny, engaging, and surprising. And contained remarkable penguins.
And two was debatably neck-and-neck - we began to get to know the characters and the plot was decent enough, as was the funny stuff.
Three, however, though enjoyable in parts, didn't really hang together - ironic, since the whole premise is about togetherness.
The characters didn't develop all that much - except perhaps for Ben Stiller's Alex. New characters were too clichd, some bordering on racist. A potentially dynamite bear in a tutu never really fulfilled her potential, becoming instead a foil for King Lemur.
The exposition alienated the little ones in the audience, and wasn't witty enough for the bigger people. None of the relationships was developed for maximum comedy. And the plot kept sinking like a souffl with the oven door open.
But I admit, there were some good throw-away lines, and even a couple of good belly-chuckles. And, even though they were way under-used - there were those wonderfully ingenious, slightly malevolent penguins.
I'll bet there'll be a fourth, but I hope not.
