It's sweet, sometimes saccharine, sometimes funny, mostly predictable, occasionally a tad maudlin. Some wonderful acting, some misplaced direction.
It's a fairy tale in a lovely setting.
It might have been a stronger film if the focus weren't so diffused, and the choice of characters were less formulaic. Let's see, we'll have one from column A and three from column B.
You want some pappadoms with that?

How interesting. The book "These Foolish Things" by Deborah Moggach, on which movie was based, was also exactly as you described the film in your above first line. I couldn't have described it better. The focus of the book is also diffused, as well as filled with formulaic characters.
Sounds to me like they adapted the book perfectly, and more the pity. |
