No, you aren't the only one. I would guess that several other fwiffers have never added periods to their submissions; as you say, the old site did it for them. Unlike you, I regret the change.
I come from advertising, where sentence fragments are frequently used to simulate speech. Like this. I use them in my own writing, as did many authors whose books I have edited. To my "ear," the "full stop" indicates a strong declaration, and most reviews without it, particularly those attempting to be "cheeky," "sound" tentative; unfinished. That's just me. Others are free to disagree. But as I said, I am just as free to let this issue influence my decision to vote.
The purpose of punctuation, in fact all orthography, is to enhance comprehension. So yes, an interrogative demands a question mark to preserve its meaning. The full-stop issue, however, is a question of taste, no matter what it says in the style book. |
