Here are my reactions to this year's Oscar nominations (I'm only commenting on categories where I have a strong and informed opinion):
Best Picture What Should Win: Roma What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Bohemian Rhapsody What Was Snubbed: Eighth Grade
Best Actor What Should Win: Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody What Was Snubbed: Paul Giamatti, Private Life
Best Actress What Should Win: Lady Gaga, A Star is Born What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Yalitza Aparicio, Roma What Was Snubbed: Charlize Theron, Tully
Best Production Design What Should Win: Black Panther What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Roma What Was Snubbed: Ready Player One
Best Score What Should Win: Black Panther What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Isle of Dogs What Was Snubbed: Incredibles 2
Best Sound (both categories) What Should Win: Roma What Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Bohemian Rhapsody What Was Snubbed: Incredibles 2
So, where does that lead us?
Bohemian Rhapsody is an entertaining, but highly flawed biopic. The story is a mess and its characters aren't very charismatic. The film has issues with pacing and focus. There are one or two great scenes (the Live Aid performances stands out), but nothing is gained from seeing this movie that wouldn't be gained by watching documentary footage of the real Freddy Mercury.
Incredibles 2 was essentially flawless in terms of execution, and its story was pretty good too. It got a well-deserved nominations for Animated Feature, but it deserved much more. Michael Giacchino's score in particular is unique, fun, and memorable.
This year will probably be most remembered for the level of respect for which Black Panther received. Its a fine film with elements of greatness, but it is still essentially a popcorn movie. The cultural response to it has been profound though and the Academy was wise to honor it. Time will tell if Black Panther is a true classic in the mold of The Dark Knight or a popular diversion that touched a nerve in the mold of Django Unchained.
I have not yet seen BlacKkKlansman, Vice, The Favourite, or Green Book yet. |
