Perhaps because it was made by Scorsese, the film received rave reviews and was hailed as a crime masterpiece ala "Goodfellas." What a crock, Nicholson is so over-the-top he should be monitored by air traffic controllers. His "rat" impression scene was right out of a Warner Bros. cartoon. The film also had "idiot plot," a term coined by Roger Ebert referring to the drama only resulting from characters acting like idiots. Why did DiCaprio send Damon the tape at the end and arrange a meeting on a rooftop? DiCaprio had the goods on Damon and needed only to disseminate multiple copies of the tape to the police (thereby assuring that it would reach a reliable source). Of course DiCaprio's stupidity set in motion some nice drama, but how contrived. Also, how did the Wahlberg character know about Damon? That wasn't explained.

I'm pretty sure that was deliberate. Given the circs either one of the guys could have wound up on the opposite side.

Spoilers ahead.

I saw this Friday night and I have to say it's one of the most overrated movies I've seen in a really long time. Yeah, it was pretty good...but this is not a classic. Last night was definitely a recognition of Scorsese's whole body of work.

The accents were horrible, to point the of being extremely distracting. Does Scorsese know that not everyone from the Boston area talks that way? Obviously he does, since Wahlberg was ragging on Leo for "switching accents" depending on where he was hanging out as a kid. So when certain members of the cast were particularly bad doing a stereotypical Boston accent - the actresses really stood out, switching back and forth throughout the same conversation, but Baldwin wasn't particularly impressive either - why didn't he have the sense to just tell them, "Okay, stop playing the part like you're from Revere and just pretend you grew up in the outer suburbs."

The "splatter shots" seemed so forced, as if Scorsese felt the need to remind everyone that it's a Scorsese film.

And the ending...talk about a "huh?" ending! I think I pieced everything together, but way too much was left up to the audience to figure out. The only part I'm sure of was that the envelope contained evidence that Sullivan was mob's inside man, along with instructions to give said evidence to Dignum. I assumed Sullivan killed Barrigan so that there would be nobody left linking him to Costello's gang, but it could have been because being a cop for so long made him sympathize with his fellow officers so he was avenging Costigan and Brown. I assumed Dignum killed Sullivan to avenge his partner Queenan, whom Sullivan set up (even though it was Costigan he was trying to set up). I think that's what it was...unless he was protecting the FBI's other informants, which would mean Dignum was a dirty cop, too. And wasn't Sullivan a little quick to turn on Costello after finding out he was an FBI informant? Sure, that makes Costello a rat and in the mob rats are supposed to die, but as Sullivan pointed out, Costello was a father figure to him, he helped his family as a kid, he put him through the academy...it just seemed a little odd that at the drop of a hat Sullivan sent his men after him and killed him.

Jack Nicholson did do a great job of channeling Whitey Bulger, if you know much about him, and the locations were well chosen...Scorsese did his homework on the Boston mob. The soundtrack was great, although reusing the same song ("Gimme Shelter") seemed awkward even if it's a great song, and that cover of "Comfortably Numb" was excruciating and WAY too loud.

Also, any takers on her baby actually being Billy's and not Colin's?

Seems almost like a silly question to me. It was obviously Costigan's baby. Sullivan couldn't get the job done in the bedroom, remember?

I generally stay away from films with this much questionable content (sex, violence, language) but a neighbor had it and offered it to me to borrow and I did for the sheer fact that I have to see what finally earned Scorsese his Oscar. I'm looking forward to it. :)

It's a good movie but to be honest Goodfellas won him the oscar they just waited until he made the same sort of movie again to give it to him!!

I said it was overrated...but you're the first person I've heard say they actually walked out on it.

That's more to do with its content than its quality I should think - as Tori said she's not much into violence and profanity. This film has both in absolute excess.

Oh it had nothing to do with it's artistic merits. It was a great plot and it was captivating. But when you have two little ones there's really no way to watch this movie in good conscience. I had it on mute with subtitles and I was stopping it every three seconds because my kids would walk through the living room. Children aside, I am fairly sensitive and the language and violence was just too much for me to handle.

Being both childless and totally insensitive, I had no trouble finishing the film. I also really, really liked it.
