Can I recommend this film very highly for those with a taste for the arthouse or the subtitled (unless you are French of course, and then it's just another film). I saw it this afternoon in London, and really enjoyed it. It's a slow paced, but very tense story, beautifully acted and directed. It reminded me of the brilliant "Hidden" in its cool cranking of understated tension, but without the perplexing confusion or obfuscation of that film.
In brief it concerns a young girl, Melanie, who fails an important piano recital exam because of the arrogance and thoughtlessness of one of her examiners, who is herself a famous concert pianist. Many years pass and Melanie has given up on music and has withdrawn within herself to a potentially dangerous degree and finds herself in the employ of the husband of the woman who wronged her as a child. She finds a way into the lives of the family and cooly formulates a sweet revenge. As I said it's a must for lovers of foreign films, piano music (it has a great menacing soundtrack with the piano at the forefront, echoing Hermann's Hitchcock scores at times, as well as Schubert, Bach and Shostakovich) and icy gallic beauties. I for one am a great fan of all three.  |

| Damn - sounds great. And we always end up with only Hebrew subtitles on these films. My dyslexia doesn't let me keep up. |

That is such a shame. All those wonderful subtitled films you're potentially missing out on!!! Do you tend to avoid them all together or just find the fast paced ones harder to follow? In the case of this film the pace isn't fast and to my memory it's not particularly wordy, so if it does come your way one day - give it a go! |
