Excellent, I'm hoping Cleese makes an appreance in the movie somewhere. If not, you can get rid of my review.

I'll be seeing it but probably wait for the DVD. I've never particularly liked a Bond flick, or particularly disliked one. I think I give them all from 6 - 7 out of 10.

I've been psyched ever since the first reports that it was going to be Casino Royale and my excitement has only grown with every rumor and official announcement. As far as I can tell, I'm the only hardcore Bond fan that never had any reservations about a reboot. I only wish some &%$@# hadn't told me an important spoiler. Jerk.

Okay... no spoilers...

Well, I'm back and I've gotta' say CR absolutely kicked arse.

Right from the off, it's a completely new direction for the films- gritty flashback, downright dirty fighting, yet remarkably low-key for what you expect from a Bond flick.

After that it gets right into the proper action and Craig's Bond quickly comes across as this whatever-it-takes kinda' hero- taking gun fights wherever the hell they end up going, regardless of the repercussions. He also seems to take a fair few risks he knows he's probably going to injure himself doing (and invariably does).

I'd say all the fights are pretty brutal, definitely taking a few pages from the Bourne films, and there's an agonsing scene involving a chair towards the end that you wonder how it's allowed in a film kids will be going to see as well.

Most surprising for me was the humour in the film. Seeing the clips I had, I wasn't expecting, well... any, but when it comes it's genuinely real humour and without John Cleese (sorry tfb) or some wacky gadget being involved. Having watched Die Another Day just yesterday, this seems about as far removed as you can get- there were a few times I saw the opportunity for a crap pun that would have undoubtedly gone in there under the previous format, but never once did the script rise to the bait. As an example of this, at one point Bond is asked how he wants his Martini- shaken or stirred. The unexpected reply he barks back is clearly the producers' feeling on keeping with the old Bond schtick.

There's maybe one gadget in there that I felt probably shouldn't have been and, had I not been so into the film, I'd've probably jumped up and decried it miraculously being there when it was needed. The big finish also felt a little tacked on for my liking- probably about the closest we get to the old style Bond films where it was a big action piece for the sake of it, but it still got the juices flowing nicely.

By the final line, everything seems to have fallen into place. I'm amazed I'm typing this, but I wasn't left wishing Brosnan had done one more or that they'd somehow CGI'ed Connery back. Craig works as Bond because this isn't the quippy Bond we've lazily come to expect- he's something else entirely. This is a whole new type of Bond (which I now realise was long overdue) and all previous expectations are thrown aside.

Curiously, somehow it still feels enough Bond to fit alongside the other films in your DVD collection, but enough of a shake up to make you think you might want to file it in a slightly different category.

All said and done, Bond film or not, it's an absolute corker of an action flick. I'm definitely off to see this one again

Er....I saw Dr. No when it first came out. Caught From Russia with Love. Did Golfinger come next? After that I sorta lost interest. Think I saw one with Brosnan and A Murdoch-like character.

I still get a kick out of Matt Helm.

Looking forward to it - the only time I can say that of a Bond film in about 20 years. I'm hoping they are going to go back to the proper sequence of Fleming's books now and remake them all as they should be!
So "Live and Let Die" next, then "Moonraker" without the camp 80s
space nonsense... that'll shake up those pub quizzes.

No fan of the Roger Moore Bond, I love the Sean Connery Bond. I saw, reluctantly, the Moore films, which cannot compare to Connery. I also enjoyed Dalton, far more that Brosnan. There's really no reason to discuss Lasenby.

I'm anxious to see this new film. For decades I have stated to anyone who would listen that the last Fleming tale to be filmed -- truly -- is Casino Royale (as the spoof one doesn't really count). I'm glad someone did it.

I'm going to see it as soon as it gets here to L.A.
