All the buzz about this del Toro [Hellboy, Devil's Backbone] fantasy which parallels the Spanish Civil War is heralding this as The Film of the Year. Can't wait to see it! Has anyone already seen it?

Not out yet, but can't wait. A friend of mine who saw it in Cannes said it was one of the best films she's ever seen. No hype then...! |

Saw it today. It was better than I expected, though I hadn't seen much hype. One aspect disappointed me, but altogether it was charming. The balance of content was not as I expected, and the better for it. And it has a very engaging performance by the young actress.

Just saw it last night, what a purely character driven reality/fantasy blend it is. I was lost in the world completely.
I've heard The Devils Backbone is well worth it too.
But Pan's Labyrinth = Highly reccommended |

Here's the one thing I hated about it (spoiler):
At the end, it is revealed that the underground realm is the girl's fantasy (because when she is the faun the stepfather looks at her and just sees her; I know that it could arguably be that he is not able to see the truth, but I do not believe that this is what is meant). This just isn't necessary; it would be much better to leave it unspecified whether the fantasy is hers or the film-makers'. |

More Spoiler talk the below text is in beige.
or you could argue that the magic reality is true and her immortal soul has descended to her real father and mother the King and Queen where she will rule etc. and both realities co - exist.
I just feel sorry for the poor mandrake, burnt alive for somebody elses sins!!
I suppose it depends, to paraphrase Peter pan, "Do you want to believe in Fairies, eh?" |

Pan's Labyrinth is not a children's film. We can tell this by the several extreme acts of violence which take place.
So, given the film is for adults, how on earth can you think that del Toro has made a film which is supposed to keep us guessing about whether fairies and giant frogs and fauns and monsters etc. really exist or not? Do you think he is a moron who believes in fairies or is he just taking the piss out of his audience?
May I suggest its more likely that he assumed that his audience were intelligent enough to be aware that fairies and giant frogs have no existence independent of the human imagination, in this case the imagination of a frightened little girl seeking escape from a very unpleasant reality.

Um, that doesn't make any sense. There are numerous films for adults (e.g. horror and sci-fi) in which things that are not part of the real world are part of the world of the film. No one is suggesting that the films are supposed to inform us about whether those things are real.
And you shouldn't have put all that in black. |

Well, the only other option I can think of is as given in my previous post. Can you think of any others? |

I just saw it tonight. I loved it. Salopian's complaint did not affect my outlook on the movie at all. I did have a problem with the following (in beige):
While I can believe that a young girl would have these fantasies, I am less inclined to believe that a girl as old as the one in the film would have trouble seperating her fantasies from the reality of the world she lives in to such an extent that she would be compelled to put herself in immediate physical danger in order to fulfill those fantasies. On the other hand, perhaps this specific child was mentally unstable to begin with and the tragic circumstances surrounding her parents' death put her over the edge, but the filmmakers don't really give us enough of a push in that direction for me to believe that either. Also, call me a hopeless romantic, but I was angry to see the girl die at the end (assuming the fantasy wasn't real). |

I take it that you have not seen the film, because no, it is not a fantasy.
It's set in civil war Spain and includes fantasy scenes as well as "real" scenes.
Next guess? |
