Well they've crept up again, as they usually do, without much fanfare. Often seen as the way to judge how the Oscar voting is going to go (and sometimes spectacularly failing to do so). Anyway, there's some interesting things in the nominees....

Little Children - Best Film? Are they insane? Far too many nominations in general for this seriously underwhelming film.

Leo DiCaprio vs Leo DiCaprio for Best Actor - shame that he's up against Forest Whitaker, probably the single most deserving acting performance in years.

Ben Affleck in acting nomination shock! Could he even win it for just baffling everyone so much that he's on the list? (Course not, he's against Jack, Brad, Marky Mark and Eddie Murphy in comeback mode)

Clint vs Clint for Best Director.... hmmm.... Come on Marty!!!

Down with Mel, up with Guillermo for Best Foreign Language film.

As usual I'm not bothered particularly about any of the TV nominations, mainly because I rarely watch the TV, but it's worth noting the sheer mass of mainstream actors who are all making their careers on the small screen now. Scary.

You can check out the full nominees list here in handy ballot form.

Not for a decade, no. Last GG nomination was for the Nutty Professor in 1997. Aside from his voice over work Eddie Murphy has been in a career slump for a very long time. Pluto Nash, Vampire in Brooklyn, I Spy, Daddy Day Care, The Haunted Mansion anyone? The last performance of his I can remember enjoying was in 1988.

I am rooting for Jennifer Hudson in Supporting Actress.

And I have to agree with you about Little Children - aside from Kate Winslet, it was hard to endure, and not in the way that Schindler's List was hard to endure because it was so tragic yet beautiful - but it seemed to go on and on and I didn't root for a single character as much as root against their bad choices.

I've been watching all the wrong movies. I've seen just a scant few of the ones in the big categories, although I did see Happyness (last weekend) and Little Miss Sunshine at the theater.

I mean, c'mon. Where's Eragon? Step Up? Poseidon for Christ's sake.

Why don't we just show our choices here? ...

Best Motion Picture Drama:
The Departed (only because I haven't seen any of the others)

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama:
Penlope Cruz Volver (was Volver a drama? I guess so, but it was equally a comedy)

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama:
Forest Whitaker The Last King Of Scotland

Best Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy:
Dreamgirls

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy:
Beyonc Knowles Dreamgirls

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy:
Sacha Cohen Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan (Its not really a performance by an actor in the classical sense, but what Sacha Cohen does is extremely difficult and he deserves recognition for it.)

Best Performance by an Actress In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture:
Jennifer Hudson Dreamgirls

Best Performance by an Actor In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture:
Jack Nicholson The Departed (its a shame that James McAvoy wasn't nominated for his role in The Last King of Scotland ... maybe for the Oscars ...)

Best Animated Feature Film:
I haven't seen any of the nominated films.

Best Foreign Languge Film:
Pan's Labyrinth (Mexico)

Best Director - Motion Picture:
Martin Scorsese The Departed (I was hoping Christopher Nolan would be recognized for the extremely complex movie The Prestige, but maybe next time ...)

Best Screenplay - Motion Picture:
The Departed - Written by William Monahan (the only nominated film I've seen ... Last King of Scotland was snubbed again!)

Original Score - Motion Picture:
The Da Vinci Code - Composed by Hans Zimmer (I'm hoping the score for Pan's Labyrinth won't be snubbed at the Oscars).
