I am happy to say that Hollywood is sending out screeners of award contending films this year. It seems like the practice has dropped off considerably the last few years for piracy fears but we have received Babel, Venus, Little Miss Sunchine and The Departed on DVD this week.

My wife is in SAG and it used to be you could go in any theater in LA that was showing a contending film and show your SAG card and get in free - last couple of years they shifted to special screenings which is not easy to get to when you have little kids - so th ereturn of the screeners (at least a few of the very good films this year) is very welcome.

I recall reading that companies had quit sending out screeners. I occasionally will purchase DVDs online or from the local rental centers when they clean out their inventory. A few times, mostly with more recent films, I've discovered that the DVD was manufactured for rental business and is only good for a limited number of hours play time. I suspect that is also an effort to stem piracy, though I found it a bit annoying to know I couldn't put it on auto-repeat and let it play all night as I sleep (yeah, I'm odd that way).
